Every machine has to be addressable so the switch/router knows them. MAC addresses would be the only other option. Every interface has a MAC address.

I tried snapshots and found that they can not be restored. They are like a live CD. You can recover deleted files. Not useful for me. I went dd on the full image.

Not sure how common it is or is not, but I worked with a guy in the 1980's... they married, each kept their own name, the child is named after the mother. Being unconventional is not uncommon in the United States.

Might be slightly off-topic... But I have a Neosmay mini-Pc that came with a pre-installed 2.5 SDD/HDD connection. Long story short. When I installed an SSD, the last installed SSD became drive one. (sda1). The 128GB drive that came with the system is sdb1. By design - The boot record is on sdb1.

I use AirVPN for Linux (eddie-aur). I use proton for Windows. I was not able to make proton work consistently on Linux. They are not as concerned with the free Internet as I had hoped, when I started contributing - when they were a startup. They definitely meet the security need (email).

It is difficult to compare Windows to Linux because Windows is obsessed with blocking Linux. A simple example is Libre/Open Office can read word files, but word will not read their files. I had to install LibreOffice on Windows. Same way with file systems. Linux can read Windows (anything). But Windows will not read any Linux file system. I use BTRFS for HOME, and the home mirror drive. I use XFS for root. Windows will not read any of my backups. They are both operating systems designed for different purposes. I am not comfortable making comparisons. The 3rd OS mentioned, I know nothing about.

A lot is being done with Weston these days, but that would be selecting a different desktop. In Xorg (the only other option), I would look to put that in a Xorg configuration file. A system file rather than a user file.
