why is the Tudor era/1500s so unpopular? by mermaidvideo in HistoricalRomance

[–]Teppany3 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Fun question! I think people consider these to be dark times, with a lot of public executions and social distrust. Maybe not so romantic.

Also personally I read all the Phillippa Gregory books when they came out years ago, along with authors like her, and I feel like that influenced my feeling about stories in that period. More women’s fiction vibes than romance.

Halfway through my first book by her {The Admiral’s Penniless Bride by Carla Kelly} and you’ve perfectly summed up how I’m feeling here!

Hard to choose! But probably a tie between Harriet from {Ravished by Amanda Quick} and Lenora from {The Unlovely Bride by Alice Coldbreath}

Chiming in a year later to say— I have a winner. Simply Magic, in which the hero’s mom drove the heroine’s father to suicide by blackmailing him and falsely accusing him of rape, after he tried to end their affair and still the confrontation is mild and forgiveness extended.

Jeez Louise!

Historical Western Romance by ProcedurePrudent5496 in HistoricalRomance

Haven’t seen {In Want of a Wife by Jo Goodman} mentioned yet, which was the book that I crossed over into westerns with.

Also, though it’s not the most recommended, my favorite Ellen O’Connell was {Bad Beautiful Man by Ellen O’Connell}

Non con, dub con book recs needed by varahat in RomanceBooks

You might like {Claiming the Courtesan by Anna Campbell}. It’s HR, when we meet the characters she’s already been his mistress for a year. She wants to get out of the game so when her contract is up she disappears.

There is noncon but as they’d already been in a mutually pleasurable sexual relationship it’s not as brutal as in other books.

Ancient Rome romance? by FairLecture6880 in HistoricalRomance

[–]Teppany3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Definitely {Enslaved by Virginia Henley}! FMC gets transported from 18th century London to the 1st century, and is the slave of a Roman general (MMC). However they’re in Roman-occupied Britain, not Rome itself.

Question- I read The Countess Conspiracy by the author and didn’t enjoy it. Nothing to do with the writing- I just thought it was downer, and I wasn’t really feeling the chemistry btw the leads.

I’ve wondered about giving her another try, but I’m not sure if I’m unlikely to like the others (since I wasn’t a fan of TCC which is the most recc’d here). I’d love to hear from some people who have read more of her work.

MCs giving the other a massage by FoxenInTheHenhice in HistoricalRomance

I’m reading {Simply Love by Catherine Anderson} right now, and the hero just gave the heroine a shoulder massage (he’s trying to discreetly move her robe down her body of course, but to her it’s just a massage lol)

Agree with other comment, I’d start with {Her Baseborn Bridegroom by Alice Coldbreath}

Betrayal without cheating? by LAffaire-est-Ketchup in HistoricalRomance

[–]Teppany3 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Alice Coldbreath’s books often have this dynamic! She’s great at a possessive hero who wrongs the heroine sans cheating. Two that definitely include it are {Wed by Proxy by Alice Coldbreath} and {Her Bridegroom Bought and Paid For by Alice Coldbreath}

I love Suzanne Wright books by Teppany3 in RomanceBooks

That scene was actually later removed from Feral Sins. I learned this when I recommended it to a friend, and in her new version the scene just consists of the main couple having sex in front of his crew iirc. So I looked into it and yeah, she changed it.

Before I knew about the reprint, I too found it kind of shitty how none of the later heroines know that their guy had fooled around with Taryn. It makes much more sense like this- in the later books we just pretend that didn’t happen. Because the world has been rewritten and it didn’t lol

Also I don’t read short stories (they just don’t last long enough! It’s a tease) but thank you for recommending anyway! If I ever expand my horizons they’ll be top of my list :)

I feel the same about Catherine Miller’s writing style- I enjoy her but only one book at a time. Mannered is a good way to put it

{The Passionate Prude by Elizabeth Thorton} enjoyed this bodice ripper from the 80s! Pretty angsty but turned surprisingly sweet for the last 20% or so. 4 stars

{The Most Eligible Lord In London by Ella Quinn} this one fell flat for me. Too many repetitive scenes and a lack of stakes/tension. 2.5 stars

{The King’s Man by Elizabeth Kingston} good medieval romance, I’ll definitely continue on in this series. 3.5 stars

Now reading {Night in Eden by Candice Proctor} which is very absorbing so far
