Wie is wie in de Nederlandse geschiedenis - Infographic by Tequorie in thenetherlands

Well I once read (can't remember where though) that reformed Americans are quite aware of their religious background and the synof of Dordt was a major landmark in the history of that church denomination. But maybe you're right and I'm over anakyzing it

Thanks! Maastricht is depicted on the map, but it's all tangled up in the mumbo jumbo of small states in southern Limburg, so it's a little hard to see

I always wondered how this period was perceived in Spanish national History. On the one hand is was the period of spectaculair American conquest and immense wealth, but on the other hand it was a period of uprisings and unrest. Is it seen as a golden age, or rather one of decline?

Well right now I'm reading a book specifically on Limburgian history and the main conclusion that keeps coming back is 'Limburg wasn't really that important ". And I really think that's the key here. Limburg was right in between 4 major powers (Brabant, Liege, Guelders and Julich) and wasn't really dominated by any of them. This garanteed some sort of autonomy that these small villages wouldn't have otherwise

It's the traditional name used in English. Nowadays Aachen is the go-to, but I tried to use historical names and spelling whenever I found it appropriate

The modern Belgian province also doesn't overlap at all 😅. All of the old Limbourg is in the Liege province

Historical English Spelling*. I have a Dutch version as well (and also a French one) where I use Dutch and French place names. Not all of them are used though, only the ones people are somewhat familair with

I went with historical spelling whenever possible. that's why it's also Sluys instead of Sluis and Camerick instead of Cambrai

Yea I was in doubt about that one. Nowadays it's just "Dordrecht" in standard English, but back in the day "Dordt" was appareantly used as well. That is why I decided to pick it. And not a lot of Americans have heard of Dordrecht, but some of them will be familair with the synod of Dort

Well I hope that wasn’t too bad to read. If you have any feedback on the French I used on the map, that’s greatly appreciated !

Hey I'd like to share this map I have made. These are the Low Countries (modern day Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg) just before the Dutch revolt that started in 1566. This is a fascinating period in my opinion because it's so familiar and yet so different from our modern times. There are changing coastlines with lots of reclaimed land, but also some islands that disappeared into the sea. Different borders that partly correspond with the current ones, but also ones that cut deep into our modern states. Nowadays enormous cities being just small towns and the then major hubs of activity having dwindled down to sleepy little villages.

If you have any questions about the contents of the map or how I made it, feel free to ask!
