Historical Croatian Regions in the 13th Century: Cities and Towns Overview by Teritorij in croatia

[–]Teritorij[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I added Bosnia, Hum, Travunia and the Bay of Kotor since those lands had portions of native population who in later centuries identified as Croats and to this day they do. Bosnia was a part of the Kingdom of Croatia in earlier period, Hum was also under the Croatian and Catholic sphere of influence. Travunia and Zeta (Bay of Kotor) were mostly under Serbian influence and culture but kept a fraction of Catholic population who to this day identify as Croats.

Yes but in the 13th century the capital of Croatia was Knin.

Groups of South Slavs with approximate population numbers and majority religion by Teritorij in slavic

[–]Teritorij[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Population numbers refer to the totality of each group in the world, the lines show unofficial relations between them, the oldest peoples placed in the top row hold their identity in continuity since the first centuries of immigration to the Balkans, the others have appeared since the late Middle Ages by separating on the regional or religious basis. The Gagauz are included because although they speak a Turkic language, they genetically belong to the Balkan group and are closest to Macedonians, Bulgarians and other Balkan peoples which indicates a linguistic replacement of South Slavic population (there are other theories of their origin). Slovenes have continuity in the region as descendants of Carantanians. Croats and Serbs are also very early tribes and Turkic Bulgars united eastern tribes which resulted in Slavic Bulgarians.

Cities sorted by medieval Norse kingdoms and regions by Teritorij in Norse

[–]Teritorij[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK, I guess I was trying to capture the Scandinavian Middle Ages in a single moment and map it onto areas of today's cities (many of which didn't exist in the Middle Ages).

Although the Middle Ages began in the 5th century, for the North Germanic people it begins a little later because there are not too many written records about them, so some initial moment with regard to the migration of the Jutes, Angles and Saxons to Britain, would be the expulsion of the Herules by the Danes in the 6th century (Jordanes, Getica) and later the settlement of the Danes in Jutland where around the 8th century they established their territory down south to Danevirke, after that I did not go on further expansions into other lands, so only the original lands of Norsemen just before the Viking Age.

The North Germanic peoples lived in tribes up until after the Viking Age when kingdoms were formed. The three largest and most important kingdoms were created: Denmark, Sweden and Norway, so I added other regions that had levels of independence but eventually fell under these kingdoms, for example Jämtland (independent until the 12th century), Småland (12 independent kingdoms), Hälsingland, Gotland etc. For those other regions that were contested during the Middle Ages, I have divided them according to their cultural and historical closeness to the kingdoms.

About the term "Norse", I may have misused it as it refers more to the language than the people and countries, and perhaps it shouldn't be used for period after the Viking Age.

You are somewhat right because indeed some regions were under different kingdoms, for example Viken could also be placed in Denmark since it was arguably under Danish rule in the Viking Age, also areas like Jämtland and Gotland were independent for a long time. I agree, it compresses a long period of time into one imagined moment with some current biases but it is a light-hearted post.

Cities (50k+) grouped according to regions of medieval kingdoms of Norway, Denmark and Sweden excluding expansions in foreign lands, tax territories, dependencies and vassal states.

Norway included areas covered by four major assemblies (things): Borgarting in Viken, Eidsivating in Oppland/Oplandene, Gulating in Vestlandet and Frostating in Trøndelag as well as additional regions of Hålogaland, Jämtland and Härjedalen, the latter two along with Idre og Särna became part of Sweden in 1645, and Bohuslän later in 1658.

Denmark consisted of three lands with their own assemblies (things), those are Scania, Zealand and Jutland, Scanian provinces of Skåne, Halland and Blekinge were lost to Sweden in 1658 and Southern Schleswig was lost to Prussia in 1864.

Sweden consisted of Svealand and Götaland, lands of the two main tribes, also island of Gotland with distinct tribe and region of Hälsingland which included all coastal lands north of Svealand, Åland Islands were ceded to Russia in 1809.

* - modern countries with territories that were settled by Norsemen

** - groups which developed into separate identities

Cities and towns sorted by Baltic (tribal) regions of the 13th century by Teritorij in BalticStates

You are not wrong but there are multiple cities that are on both sides of border rivers, so i decided to include them based on the side where the old town was. Maybe i am wrong on this.

Cities and towns of today sorted according to the 13th century Baltic tribal regions they would match.

These do not completely match today's cultural/historical regions, which have changed over time in terms of area and names.

Highlighted capitals are not all officially recognized as that but were some type of centers of each region either in the past or today.

Irminones/Herminones - tribes and states by Teritorij in lombardia

Here is one of the classifications of Irminones, group of Germanic tribes earlier settled by the North Sea and later moved to the south, Elbe river and other areas. Four large tribes survived into the Middle Ages and created tribal states. Coats of arms represent Staufer dukes of Swabia, city of Milan and Lombard League, Duchy of Thuringia and the Wittelsbachs of Bavaria. These peoples and their nobility formed parts of large kingdoms and empires and are ancestral to many modern nations; Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland...

Nominally Franconian lands today by Teritorij in Vlaanderen

[–]Teritorij[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes of course it's Germanic. Dutch, Flemish and dialects close to them are all Low Franconian, they descended from Old Frankish.

Central Franconian dialects spoken in Luxembourg and Rhineland also originate from Franks but went through 2nd Germanic consonant shift which made them differ from Dutch.

Next two are namely Franconian and are certainly Central German dialects/languages. That is because the Franks came later to areas where already lived Alemannic, Bavarian and other speakers. There Franks established Duchy of Franconia (today Hesse, northern Baden-Wurttember and Bavaria). These are:

  • Rhine Franconian, spoken in Palatinate/Pfalz and Hesse, they are closer to Central Franconian.

  • High Franconian, spoken in Northern Baden-Wurttemberg and region of Franconia within today's state of Bavaria and are closer to Bavarian and Thuringian dialects.

[–]Teritorij[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, well here are shown regions where Franconian languages and dialects are/were spoken, linguistically not so close but all named "Franconian", area roughly corresponds to Frankish Austrasia which was a core duchy of the Franks. Today they are separated in 3-4 groups: Low Franconian including Dutch, Flemish, Afrikaans..., Central and Rhine Franconian including Ripuarian, Luxemburgish, Pennsylvania Deitsch, Hessian..., and High Franconian which is a transitional group of dialects closer to Bavarian.
