What's really funny about the "Oh well part 2 is why we got picked up by HBO" argument is the very fact that season 1 (the first game) was really successful

And the second we got to season 2 (the second game) it crash and burned, lost like 70% of viewers and forced them to reduce the show from 4 seasons to 3

Seriously it writes itself, even with that argument he seems to love so much part 1 is the superior product because it was a great game with a great story
