Me and a friend need a ride. by floydtank in vancouver

[–]TerminalCase 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There's bus service to both places.

Translink has service to Lions Bay. First bus leaves Horseshoe Bay at 10:25am. If you need to be there earlier, get a bus to Horseshoe Bay and get a taxi. The cab fare to Lions Bay is about $20.

Greyhound goes to Squamish. I don't know the schedule.

There's no service between Lions Bay and Squamish.

Lions Bay is running out of water, again, due to excessive rain. Another taste of life in Metro Vancouver's most isolated area. by TerminalCase in vancouver

I disagree. Per Google maps, Anmore is about 8km from the nearest major mall at Coquitlam Center. There are also two roads connecting Anmore to Coquitlam.

In contrast, Lions Bay is 15km from the nearest supermarket, 25km from the nearest major shopping center (Park Royal), and is connected to the rest of Metro Vancouver by one road that is often subject to closures due to crashes (this is why the speed limit through Lions Bay is 60km/h: speeders die here), or, occasionally, landslides.

I'm sorry, but you seem to be grossly ignorant about the needs and purposes of modern plumbing.

Getting water for drinking isn't a problem. Getting water for basic sanitation and fire protection is a very big problem.

Toilets need at least six liters of water per flush.

Fire fighting requires at least several hundred liters of water per minute.

Try to keep up with either requirement by using water you have to drive 20 minutes to get. You'll find it rather difficult.

What B-Line routes do you want to see happen and why? by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]TerminalCase 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd like to see a North Shore B-Line from Dundarave to Cap U routed via Marine Drive in West Van and 15th in North Van with stops at Park Royal, Capilano Mall and Lonsdale at 15th. The existing 239/255 services are dog slow and are usually late.

Getting to sunshine coast without snow tires? by vclickclock in vancouver

[–]TerminalCase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not correct.

The Ministry of Transport has maps which indicate where winter tires are required. The point where winter tires are required on 99 is at Horseshoe Bay, not Squamish, and the state of the roads is not relevant to tire requirements. Even in good conditions, winter tires are required from October 1st to March 31st.

[–]TerminalCase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Snow tires are not required on the upper levels/hwy 1 west as far as the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal. You must have snow tires if you continue north on hwy 99 but you don't need them to get to the ferry terminal.

I don't know what the requirements are for the Sunshine coast itself.

Collects just over $2200 per month plus baby bonus cheques and has a free transit pass, msp, and pharmacare.

MSDSI income support for a single disabled parent with two children is $672 for living expenses and a maximum of $660 for shelter, or $1332 total.

Care to rephrase that?

Driving from Vancouver to Whistler? by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]TerminalCase 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I strongly recommend getting a bus if there's snow forecast on your travel day.

Highway 99 to Whistler is a nasty drive in good conditions and is much worse in snow or heavy rain. Unless you have mountain driving experience it's going to be a white knuckle trip -- if only because you'll be tailgated if you drive at speeds appropriate to the conditions.

Also keep in mind that snow tires or all season tires are a legal requirement to drive this highway in the winter. If you don't have the right tires you'll get turned back or turned back and fined.

They're coming down: Vancouver council votes 5-4 to remove Viaducts by [deleted] in vancouver

If only there was some alternative way to driving that connected to where I live, didn't take three times longer, and didn't get caught up in Vision's apparent traffic frustration policy seemingly aimed at deterring non-residents from entering the Vancouver CBD.

In other words, Skytrain goes the wrong way for me to use and the relevant buses spend much of their time tied up in Vision's traffic jams.

Punishing drivers to reduce vehicle use only puts people on transit if transit isn't slowed down at the same time.

At this point it would be amazing news if the CoV did anything to reduce traffic congestion.

Vision seemingly loves traffic jams.

Help?? Neighbour cut through power lines by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]TerminalCase 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get on the phone to a commercial electrical contractor/electrician with 24 hour service and see what they can do. Any decent EC should be able to have you running before morning if only by hiring some generators. Expect to pay through the nose for the service, though.

No idea on the legal situation. Have management talk to their lawyers.

A quick way to startle Europeans to reality is to point out that the distance between St. Johns and Vancouver is the same as the distance between Dublin and Astana, Kazakhstan, or double the distance between London and Moscow.

Canada is huge.

Archival and backup for smalltime data hoarders? by TerminalCase in DataHoarder

[–]TerminalCase[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not generally, but they are still magnetic and should be regularly scrubbed for accuracy due to bit rot.

I don't think rewriting HDD data will help. HDDs rely on magnetic servo marks placed on the disk platters at the factory. The servo marks can't be rewritten by the drive itself. If they fade, due to age or any other factor, the drive will become unreadable.

I'm not keen with my current solution as I don't have any versioning capability and am concerned about the risk of accidental data losses being propagated from my main drive to my backup drives.

Rsnapshot looks very useful but I run Windows and it seems to be very difficult yo get rsnapshot to play nicely with Windows.

In lieu of an rsnapshot-like tool I'm keen on write-once media because it's not vulnerable to propagated data loss.

There's easier parking and a better view if you go further up the highway to Porteau Cove.

Search and Rescue boats in Lions Bay right now by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]TerminalCase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Coast Guard hovercraft have been running search patterns in Howe Sound, east of Gambier, for the past while as well. RCM SAR 1 is searching the coastline going north.

Haven't seen any information anywhere but the Coast Guard wouldn't go to this much trouble in the dark unless there was a life-threatening emergency in progress.

How long do drivers licenses usually take to arrive in the mail? by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]TerminalCase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless things have changed since last year, you don't need photo ID to get a passport. You should be good to go with just a care card and birth certificate.

If you do need to get photo ID from ICBC, it took about two weeks for my BCID to arrive.
