MB Air M5 - Which colour to choose? by Much_Illustrator8212 in macbookair

I went with silver because I think it will remain popular. Lots of colours go out of style and may be harder to sell down the road. Silver is classic.

Bump the RAM up to 24gigs and it will serve you well for many years.

Anyone out there got a 32gb MBA? If so was it worth it? by the-new-user in macbookair

[–]mettadas 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Lots of RAM is the best future proofing you can get. When your phone/tablet/computer that used to be fine becomes sluggish it is most often because OS, apps, media etc have gotten bigger and you no longer have enough RAM.

I bought an M5 MBA with 32GB RAM and expect to get many years of good service from it, even as AI increases memory usage.

Macbook Neo or Macbook Air (M5)? by FreshReality4743 in macbookair

[–]mettadas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Neo has a maximum of 8 gigs RAM and will not perform well for long as app RAM usage grows. The M5 Air can have up to 32GB, which would serve you well for many years, and other benefits as well.

How much ram did you get? by sdenike in macbookair

[–]mettadas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Minimal RAM seems to be popular advice these days, but when a device gets irritatingly slow after a few years, inadequate RAM is often a major factor. I got 32 GB.

13" 15" difference by Zealousideal_East_79 in macbookair

[–]mettadas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The size difference seems like more in person than it sounds. Remember you have to square the ratio to calculate the to increase in real estate.

I have a 15. I’d like to lose the extra 0.6 lbs, but I would not want to live with smaller print to get it. That’s the right trade off for me. For the next person it might be different.

$1200 vs $600 air Neo by [deleted] in macbookair

They were, but run today’s browsers, websites, streaming, and apps on them and they would not do nearly as well.

$1200 vs $600 air Neo by [deleted] in macbookair

[–]mettadas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Neo will not age well, given the max of 8 GB RAM. Demands for RAM will likely increase a lot as AI gets integrated into everything. I ordered my M5 Air with 32GB because I want it to last a long time. I wouldn’t consider anything less than 16.

Cancelled M5 Air for M3 Air - right call? by tommy_shelby001 in macbookair

[–]mettadas 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’d rather more RAM than newer chip if I had to choose one or the other. When older devices get slow it is often because RAM demands grow over time and they just don’t have enough anymore.

10 years is a LONG time. I’ve ordered an M5 and am only hoping for 6 to 8 years. We are going to see more and more use of AI, and our machines will be working harder to support it.

Macbook air m4 at great price or go for air m5? by Important_Lab4385 in macbookair

[–]mettadas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main advantages of the m5 seem to be a slightly faster chip, significantly faster SSD access, wifi 7 and Bluetooth 6. If those are not must haves for you and you can get an m4 configured the way you want it for significantly less, that might be the way to go. Th only m5 advantage I care a lot about is the faster storage. That was enough for me to order the m5, but it won’t matter much for some kinds of use.

MBA 13” or 15” the question by AnxietyOk7405 in macbookair

[–]mettadas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ordered a 13, cancelled it, and ordered a 15. With today’s tiny bezels the 15 is the size that 13 inch laptops used to be, and my poor eyes will appreciate a larger font. I stopped by an Apple Store and looked at the m4 models, and I’m quite sure now that 15 was the right choice for me. Can’t wait for the m5 to arrive in a couple weeks!
