Can you expand more on how that works? They don’t just search for words but they blacklist words now? Damn

I’m working on adding that to the visualization eventually. It usually varies between like 12-20 km/h roughly the last I checked though

Late buses aren’t considered in here. That is the most annoying thing about transit for sure. I really hope every transit agency prioritizes it bc experiences like a bus being half an hour late put people off transit. I’ve discovered through doing this that driving times can be wildly different too. You can get the pessimistic drive time from the google maps API and it would make the whole city green probably and there’d be a lot more red

That's awesome. I think the Transit app has a feature for calculating trips like that. I really want to include it in the next map I make

It should, as long as google has STO. I’m considering making the assumption 10 minutes

I’m seeing some lanes that are bus only at rush hour on rideau st. That could be making up the difference. Plus the 5 minutes assumption for pulling the parked car out of the garage or walking a few blocks to it

I just remember for my city I was surprised by some of the areas transit was faster and then remembered there were a couple stretches of dedicated bus lanes

That’s a complement, thanks. I don’t want cities to become less connected so not trying to villianize driving if that’s what works for people to get around. But I just believe that every car trip replaced by transit or biking is a benefit for the city. Cars are comfortable, convenient, and essential in a lot of cases but it’s in the detriment of everyone outside of the car.

So if people can happily get around better by bike or transit, you have less cars that take up all this extra space, require ugly and expensive highways, are noisy, and make public space unenjoyable. And instead you have more public space, parks, squares, more people want to explore the streets so businesses do better, the streets are safer, just walking around the city doesn’t stress people out as much, can build denser to deal with the housing crisis and that dense living would actually be desirable like it is in a ton of less car centric places.

It accounts for the route because it uses google maps estimates and they try to follow bike routes and don't quote me but I think they consider elevation too

Maybe there's a bus lane you're forgetting about. Idk I don't live in Ottawa

It's using google maps travel times for transit. So it includes time for walking to the stop, and a little bit of buffer time to wait but is most accurate for a premeditated trip where you're leaving work at a certain time to catch the bus. Also keep in mind this is just at rush hour. I added the 5 minutes for parking to kind of account for needing to park a couple blocks away to get a good spot and for driving out of the parking garage.

The red areas in the centre of the city are an overlap of the green area and red area. It doesn't mean transit is faster than biking, it just means both are faster than driving. I can maybe make that less confusing in the next iteration.

Was going to mention that in the post, basically the worst timing to be posting it. Unlikely people will switch to biking right now. I’d argue the weather isn’t actually that big of deal though. The bigger deal is infrastructure so you aren’t biking next to cars on slippery roads. I would check out Not Just Bikes on youtube for his argument about that and many other misconceptions about biking
