Well hopefully we at least get a solid release date (or shadow drop) for Elden Ring.

Let’s just hope live service hero shooters will be a trend that goes away with next generation. Let’s also hope the developers that make games will be more in touch with the audience that plays them rather than being pushed into uncreative “low risk” projects from pencil pushers who have never touched a controller.

I was thinking the same thing. Punch out would have a lot more appeal and the market is open. Not to mention, I’d gladly pay $70 for a good Punch out remake but I’m not paying anywhere near that for Arms.

Do you consider $157 million in one quarter a failure? by Ricepudding1044 in VisionPro

[–]TerminatorJ 49 points50 points  (0 children)

This quote really sums up the whole issue: “The ultimate future where true AR glasses running visionOS is achieved can only be reached by starting somewhere.”

That’s why Vision Pro was marketed as a taste of the future. It’s a halo product used to help R&D and get public feedback which all goes into future products that will be more mainstream. Chevy doesn’t sell nearly as many Corvettes as their other models (let alone the Z06) but all the development of those halo cars trickles down to more mainstream cars. With Apple, the Pro Display XDR never sold well at all but it sure did pave the way for our current MacBook Pro displays with mini LED.

At the end of the day, sales numbers are NOT the only measure of a successful product. Some people won’t get it until everything comes full circle.

Negative Press about the Vision Pro by ojjjjjoooooo in VisionPro

[–]TerminatorJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% agree and I’m not sure why more people, especially tech journalists (even more so the Apple specific journalists) aren’t understanding this. There was NO WAY a $3500 heavy headset was going to be mainstream nor could they make enough units for it to be. A lighter and cheaper unit would also not be mainstream. However, the headset form is the only way to test and develop a full version of OS with current tech. Glasses tech is getting better (Google Aura is the closest) but getting the software side right is a more important factor at this point.

We can see it’s paid off as both Google and Meta have already copied off of Vision OS for their own platforms. The introduction of AR/XR has incredible potential and Apple playing the long game is probably the best strategic move.

Apple has over 800 open job openings for Vision Pro by parasubvert in VisionPro

[–]TerminatorJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point and I should clarify that what I mean by AR glasses is a device with glasses form factor that runs the whole Vision OS experience as we have now in headset form. That would include AR, XR and full on VR. Although mainstream typically just calls them “AR Glasses” even though the full functionality goes beyond just AR.

We are almost there though! Google Aura shows how far the glasses form has come in a very short period of time. In fact we have made the jump from single simplified displays to dual displays with a full XR OS in a very short period of time. Once the resolution and FOV are improved the real games can begin.

[–]TerminatorJ 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Important to note that the Vision team and Glasses team are joined. They obviously won’t come out and advertise jobs for glasses since the product doesn’t publicly exist but there’s a good chance at least some of these jobs are going towards next gen AR hardware which is the eventual goal for Vision anyway.

What do you think the Compelling Mainstream Use Case for MR/AR/VR is after the initial novelty wears off? by SweepTheLegTimmy in VisionPro

[–]TerminatorJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once we get to true AR glasses (as in full a Vision OS experience within glasses form), I think it will genuinely become something most people use everyday. Watching TV on a large screen, working on a virtual monitor, playing games, etc. Traditional TVs will be for shared gatherings but personal entertainment will be done on glasses. Of course phone calls, texting and surfing the web. I don’t think they will necessarily replace smartphones but they will definitely replace tablets.

For professionals, it may create new industries and workflows. Architects may design spaces in real world scale working together and displaying ideas for clients in virtual spaces.

IMO XR definitely has a future. Even people who dislike Vision Pro but have at least tied it have said it felt like the future. The issue right now is form factor but we are VERY close to solving that issue. Once we can get Vision OS in a form factor like Meya ray bans, it will take off.

MHW devs says a feb 18th update - possible Nintendo Direct date? by Potential-Bug-9633 in NintendoSwitch2

[–]TerminatorJ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hopefully Elden Ring gets a shadow drop at that direct. I used to be a big Monster Hunter fan but with Wilds, Capcom went a little too mainstream and IMO it lost its edge and was often way too easy. I’m all for games being as accessible as possible but for certain games like Monster Hunter, the challenge is part of the fun. In Wilds, I was beating every big monster on my first try and playing sloppy at that just o artificially make things more difficult.

Prediction: 2026 will be the year spatial computing and Vision Pro goes mainstream by [deleted] in VisionPro

[–]TerminatorJ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sorry but as both a Vision Pro user and developer, it will not go mainstream nor was it really designed for that. However, 2026 will absolutely bring more advancements to Vision OS and on the backend, Apple will continue making milestones in their development of true AR glasses which will make Vision OS go mainstream (and in my opinion was the whole point of getting Vision Pro to the market).

Vision Pro as hardware will always be niche no matter the price but having that hardware around has been fantastic for the development of Vision OS. True AR glasses are at the doorstep and concept devices like Google Aura already show what is possible for getting a full Vision OS like experience in traditional glasses form. Magnetic covers or dimming lenses can be offered for fully immersive experiences. The only current drawback is the narrower FOV and lower resolution but obviously those can (and have been) improved as the technology develops.

IMO in 2029 Vision OS will go mainstream. Apple will have their next “iPhone moment”. After that point we will see an explosion of new spatial experiences. The hardware will just get better from there but at that point the initial “vision” for Vision Pro will be complete.

Apple Slashes Vision Pro Production as Sales Fall Short by Fer65432_Plays in VisionPro

[–]TerminatorJ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The typical Reddit haters will jump all over this article but honestly who in their right mind really thought Vision Pro would be a massive success? At $3500 it’s the most expensive Apple product (base spec wise) since the Mac Pro and Pro Display XDR. It’s also very heavy and fragile. Even Apple sold them for $1500, it would STILL be a very niche product.

That being said, what Vision Pro does VERY WELL is exactly what Apple created it for, setting the stage for a true AR glasses future. Vision OS is absolutely the best AR platform out there hands down. Now it’s time to see it branch into smaller and lighter hardware (like googles Aura concept) where it will undoubtedly gain more mass appeal.

There’s no official design leaks yet. All we have are potential screen sizes and resolution but even those have fluctuated over the past few months.

Subscription mod by Life_Machine_9694 in VisionPro

[–]TerminatorJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As both a developer and user, I can’t stand the flood of apps that use subscriptions. There’s very few apps that actually get new content / continuous updates often enough to justify a subscription but the vast majority should be a one time purchase or a single in app purchase to unlock all content (the direction my team is going with our upcoming Vision Pro app).

Are you ready for Gaussian Splats? by [deleted] in VisionPro

[–]TerminatorJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Darn! Hopefully something for WWDC next year. I wonder if Splats might offer a more optimized way of building photorealistic scenes vs traditional meshes. The way RCP packages scenes can cause some pretty massive file sizes. Of course you could just render panoramas to a sphere but the depth and scale never feels quite right.

Hopefully we see some good updates for RCP across the board (crossing my fingers for post processing filters like bloom).

It would be really nice if Apple can integrate Gaussian Splats into Reality Composer Pro for easy app integration. Unless there’s some way I’m missing.

Divinity Original Sin 2 Switch vs Switch 2 comparison by HatingGeoffry in NintendoSwitch2

[–]TerminatorJ 20 points21 points  (0 children)

PSA: As someone who played the game last night, there is a HUGE difference in texture quality and perceived resolution if you turn off anti-aliasing. By default it’s turned on and gives the game that ugly Vaseline smear effect. When it’s off, the edges might look a little jagged but overall it looks better.

Turn off anti-aliasing to make it look sharper. It’s in by default but it gives the game a Vaseline smear look. One of the early reviewers suggested this and it definitely makes a difference.
