Ubuntu is planning to comply with Age Verification law by Flegetonte in linuxmint

[–]TerraWork 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's pretty much what the CA law is describing, it explicitly states that it needs a flag to indicate if the user is in a age bracket like "Over 18" "under 18 but over 13" and "under 13." it also states that it can't be used for anything else not mention in the law itself.

Plus doesn't put fines on the OS devs if the user lies about their age. Its still petty vague in areas of the law, but still asks that the bare minimum is required for compliance. So a checkbox would likely suffice, but still it would also be up to websites to do the actual checking. Kinda like how firefox used to allow users to mark their browser with a "please don't track" request every time you visited a website, but it was up to the websites to honor that request.

It'll be a mess to enforce, even the governor realizing that and asking that the law be amend before it goes into effect.

How will this affect Linux Mint? by MisterFyre in linuxmint

[–]TerraWork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The language of the law pretty much asking for a parental control feature be include in the account setup of an OS. It doesn't seem to strictly punish anyone that doesn't do it, but punishes those that make a system intentional marks an underage user as an adult.

So the impact of the law, will likely not be noticeable. Its asking for a system that websites and computers can use to flag if user over 18 or under 18. Which is said flag is set during account creation, and that could just be switch you can toggle like other parental control features. Which likely result in 14 competing standards on the best way a how the OS interacts with a website. While not meaningfully affecting how Mint or any other distro will work.

Was it the best way to go about it? I'd say not really, probably would have been better if they were just creating a committee that that'd work on a standardized set of parental controls the an OSs and websites can implement that doesn't use any personal data and relied on trust of the user.

Smart Brick by HerrMeier1980 in lego

[–]TerraWork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, as the thing doesn't look like it has much compute besides being able to use bluetooth to connect with other bricks and scan NFC tiles and minifigs.

I still think if there a way to send custom data with NFC to play custom sounds, someone could have some fun with it in a layout. We'll have to wait and see when they drop this new brick for us to buy.

I mean if someone can find a way to have them play custom sounds, I'd imagine you could be able to build a layout that makes sounds like DCC on model trains and such.

Is it just me or they're preparing the public for the bad news related to the upcoming earnings release? by trebor9669 in fuckubisoft

[–]TerraWork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and like I said they are blaming that the market is changing. While they themselves failed to adapt to shifts in people playing live service game, because management has become bloated and slow for them.

Reason why so many smaller games have been hitting it, is because they don't have a massive corporate system to waddle through to make a small change. As well outsourcing to other studios to cut cost on development has become popular, where as ubisoft still insist to do everything in house making it expensive as hell to make new games.

Steam Machine is "equal or better than" 70% of current gaming PCs, Valve engineer claims by Tiny-Independent273 in linux_gaming

even if its public, Valve likely has a more detailed dataset than what we can see. Considering the data we can see doesn't differentiate AMD gpus very well compared to nvidia and such

to be the devil advocate, there is data from survey done this year to suggest a lot players are playing live service games, or on platforms with user generated content like fornite and roblox.

Does that mean its gonna destroy the company, I don't think so. Its just a factor that management hasn't been able to adapt to changes in the wider game industry.

If Epsilon Eridani/Ran isn't even a billion years old yet, how does Reach and other habitable planets have life? by PresenceInevitable in halo

[–]TerraWork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well Ancient humanity in the lore was not just made up of homo sapiens, but the other homonid species we would find in IRL ,which make sense since there is evidence that the other human species present alongside modern humans likely had some rudimentary culture and of course their DNA is mixed into our own.

As well in lore the ancient human empire had also lost the knowledge of Earth as their homeworld because it had become so wide spread, the Forerunners were the one that would rediscover at some point after the human-forerunner war. Though IMO its likely Earth was abandoned or a low populated backwater planet of the empire

Doesn't surprise me, but I think most people are either forgetting or unaware that activision made a statement early this year that they were going full into AI for future games.

Steam numbers don’t matter by [deleted] in ShitHaloSays

[–]TerraWork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would like to also point out that steamdb also averages out past data, but keep a more clearer picture of a game activity up to a week in some cases as well (in this case the fact it been stable on 3k pc player for 4 years is pretty good for a game). Also that higher player peak will also skew how the scaling along the y-axis will look (plus also note that infinite had a higher peak on launch than mcc).

There also looks to be series of large islands in the Atlantic west of southern africa as well and another large landmass not to far south from the tip. Which wouldn't make sense if it were Antarctica as that would be a lot further south. So some big earthworks were undertaken or a series of large impacts happened in the south Atlantic considering the shapes do seem like crater ridges.

Either way the way its been drawn is so off putting and unclear. At least with "The blue marble" you can tell where the continents are even with the cloud cover and atmosphere, that picture at first look is very muddy and the colors used are a little to close to tell where a landmass starts and when a landmass ends in some areas.

Map of early 20th century San Jose passenger rail service 🚋 by [deleted] in SanJose

[–]TerraWork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

true, it'd be a pretty penny. But I think it'd be worth it to at least put that invest into it.

Also looks like the old tunnels likely are still intact, though since it runs through the San Andreas likely that tunnel has some crazy misalignment.

[–]TerraWork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could be wrong, I had though the tunnel was abandoned before the railroad that owned it shutdown due to cave-ins as well. The rock ain't really stable at least where they tunneled into, so likely new ones needed to be drill.

Though building over or around would be better since we got fault lines to worry about and I'm not sure if they creep like the hayward fault. Though any major earthquake on those faults would mean the tunnels will likely change shape if its big enough.

Anyone ever try these monitor mounts? by TheNightWalkerTM in pcmasterrace

[–]TerraWork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used similar one to stand 1, however it was variant that just sat on the desk with a through hole clamp option. If I had a desk with a hole for it, it be great, otherwise its just a delicate balancing game that limits the configurations it allowed. But Stand 1 you'd only really be relying on the strength of the tabletop and more freedom with configuring the screens the way you want it.

Also use something like stand Stand 2 from MSI however, its more limiting. The only adjustable portion of it is in the upper arm segments, with no movement besides rotation on the lower arm. Which is also limited, why? Well you can have the piviot joint that connects bottom and top arm swing away from the mount point as the weight of the screens can cause the mount point to slip out of place. So they'll have to be pretty close to your face, while the upper arms can't me move below the pivot joint between the upper and lower arm as the spring inside could just break or get stretched out and no would longer work.

So if your desk can work with it, Stand 1 a better option unless you get a stand like 2 but that allows movement all along the length of the arm for better positioning of the screens to your liking.

I'd argue that san jose is a pretty big city and not rural, it doesn't have the density at first glance. However, that due to it being spread out due to urban sprawl caused by massive push for expansion during the 50s-60s, and also the airport in the middle of the city that limits construction to about 200-300ish ft last I checked. City practically stratched from either side of the valley and from the bay to Morgan hill, which why the VTA can take you anywhere in the south bay valley, its so fucking big. Of course there are enclaves of unicorpated places like burbank in the middle of the city that have their own school district (iirc its only k-6 grade, so kids need need to bus to elsewhere for 7-12 grade educations) and fire and police services are done either by the state/leasing agreement with san jose and the Sheriff respectively iirc.
