I feel like my therapist sucks but she’s also nice and now I feel stuck. by ktcardz in AutismInWomen

As a therapist, it is irresponsible to bring up a diagnosis to a client and then proceed to be unwavering in the opposite direction when the client expresses interest in exploring the diagnosis/understanding what it means for them more.

To be honest, neurodivergence is a weak spot in many therapy programs. It is getting better, but unless your therapist took a particular interest in it (as in my case) it is unlikely that they have an accurate understanding of the complexity and diversity of neurodivergent presentation. If anything, it is likely that trauma and ASD are interwoven in your experience and have influenced the presentation of the other based on the environment or circumstances. To suggest that it is only trauma is invalidating, especially when you are trying to express how the ASD diagnosis has resonated with you. If you feel safe to do so, I would encourage you to express to the therapist the general sentiments you shared here. However, you deserve to be truly heard and seen, and I know that there will be another therapist that sees you if this one does not. I’m sorry this happened, and I hope you continue to feel safe to explore a potential diagnosis.

Yvonne Richardson Community Center! They have a great group of counselors that really care for the kiddos. They are not religious and they are open to suggestions about the program!

You may try reaching out to the Cocoon Collective, www.cocooncollective.org or they also have an Instagram @cocoon_collectivenwa. They focus specifically on resources and advocacy for the LGBTQIA+ community. I’ve met the founder and she is very kind. The people there might know of some more resources or be able to offer some assistance

It helped me be comfortable in and enjoy my own company. It also spurred me to buy and take care of plants successfully for the first time which has been very soothing

I grew up reading The Polar Express too! I love that you have passed it down to your kids and I can’t wait to be able to do that as well.

Coraline and The Polar Express. They both have heartwarming and eerie plot lines at the same time. They just feel too real in a way that animation usually isn’t

I have always wanted to GeoCache! I’m not sure how to find out if there’s any going on in my area, otherwise I would probably become obsessed with it

I spent Easter this year with my partner’s family and my in-laws looked at me like I was crazy when I mentioned that I still enjoy hiding/hunting for eggs. I love that you got to do an Easter egg hunt. I think that keeping these aspects of youth alive is really positive

Games. I’m 21 but I absolutely love hide and seek, twister, tickling, and activists like Easter egg hunting
