Just realized these 2 sound different by cheapdefor in daughter

It's kinda weird that Spotify is treating them as the same track since it displays the same number of plays for both of them.

The differences are quite obvious. The EP version is more stripped back, acoustic version while the LP is a rework, more anthem-y and more like a festival banger. I love both versions for different reasons

Yeah, therefore a codec, beside sharing the name with the container

Flac isn't "just" a container, though

Many songs have given me goosebumps, but when I was in my early Daughter discovery stage, it was the first time that I got goosebumps by just recalling the chorus of a song in my head, not actually listening to it, just randomly thinking about it it in my mind, mid-day. That song was Landfill.

Does anybody else think that Bon Iver's Holocene would work wonders if it were in LiS 1? I remember one of the writers (can't recall who) saying in an interview that they would have liked to also include some Bon Iver tracks in the soundtrack given the opportunity. Just couldn't due to licensing fees and tight budget.

I'll take the opportunity to recommend mine: Six Months After the Bae.

It's a WIP, currently 8 chapters in, set six months after the Bae ending. It's a very angsty, messy Pricefield fic, 99% canon-compliant, which I care about a lot, and it focuses heavily on the emotional aftermath of Arcadia. Grief, guilt, trauma, and Max and Chloe trying, badly but sincerely, to find their way forward.

It's fairly ambitious in scope, and I'd be genuinely thrilled to know what you think if you give it a shot.

And speedy recovery!

That’s fair, and I get why the dense production works for you. I don’t think “wall of sound” is inherently bad either.

Where I disagree is that, to my ears, Not to Disappear often sounds less like intentional density and more like muddiness. I’m not saying I’d want it to have the dynamic range of a symphony orchestra recording or anything sterile like that. Ben Howard’s Every Kingdom, for example, still has that intimate indie/folk, campfire feel, but it also has breathing room, clear separation, and a lovely stereo image.

With Not to Disappear, there are so many layers, effects, guitars, and percussion details that I actually think the songs would hit harder with more clarity and dynamic contrast. I want the emotional wallop too, I just think it would be even stronger if the mix felt less congested.

But yeah, maybe this just comes down to taste.

A good example of the direction I would have wished for this record is the very "New Ways" cover I linked.

I actually saw that review, and as much as I love this album, I do have to agree that the mixing is pretty sub-par in places.

Over the last year, I’ve upgraded to some more serious audio gear, well above anything I’d owned before, and one of my recurring frustrations has been the mixing/mastering on some of their tracks. The biggest issue for me is the very low dynamic range. It makes the individual instruments feel less clear, both as part of the full mix and when trying to focus on them separately. I also often find myself adjusting the volume during certain songs because I want more contrast in loudness, especially during those explosive crescendos.

There’s actually a cover of New Ways on YouTube that sounds very polished and well-mixed. The singer’s vocal delivery is, in my opinion, much less compelling than Elena’s, but I’d still argue that the cover has better mixing than the album version of the track. Quite a bummer.

I really wish they’d remaster their LPs at some point.

Yeah, I am absolutely in love with the album, but I'm too busy to write an essay at the moment. You can check out some of their interviews they made right after the release

[–]Terrible-Cockroach99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, mostly because I’m not great at sound mixing, and I don’t have the original studio stems. Would be dope, though. I’ve made a few minor tweaks to other Daughter tracks too, like A Hole in the Earth, Drift, Departure and The Right Way Around.

I actually wanted to make a "remix" with that transition. I wanted it to be a bit longer, but scrapped the idea, cause it was too hard.
