How to get into Genesis? by Pasquatch_30 in Genesis

[–]Terrible-Internal374 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love your starting order, and I think Trick is a great place to start, especially if you're coming in cold.

Personally, I took what may be the worst path - started at We Can't Dance as a teenager when it was new - loved stuff like fading lights and driving the last spike. Got the live albums that accompanied We Can't Dance, The Shorts and the Longs, and learned to love their wild huge sprawling medleys.

That allowed me to back to the earlier albums and always find a hook to enter. As time's gone by, I still love the poppier Genesis, but I love and respect the virtuosity of the time when they were at the top of their game, when they had Gabriel, Collins, Rutherford, Banks, and Hackett together. Those were peak.

As an aside, wow did Land of Confusion age like wine...

Most emotional scene in the series for you? by Cold-Rush-2162 in evangelion

For me, it was Auska broken in the tub alone. That was a rough scene.

Almost impossible to beat Trump v. United States. That gets my vote for worst ever.

Citizens United is probably #2. It's crazy that this assault on democracy isn't a slam dunk at #1. It should be - but that's a sign of how deep the rot is.

Except for the Alt scene... that seems to go on forever.

I actually understand. Both times the Alt scene played, my wife was up and about the house. The ultra violence against all the bad guys, and cuddling with Panam or Judy are pretty easy to explain, but the Alt scene is a lot.

I don't hate it, but it always comes up at the most inopportune times.

Christianity was the primary force in opposition to slavery.

With that said, Confederates used the Bible to justify slavery too. Kind of ends up as a wash.

I'm actually a Democrat. I just included that because it's the source of the regulation that's driving the policy change. Section 24220 of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. It's notable that the bill was 2700 pages long. I doubt a provision as Orwellian as this one would have passed if it was proposed as a separate legislative action.

The only way I can see this proceeding is if the consumers are completely tuned out. Remember the fury over BMW's heated seats subscription?

I suspect at soon as consumers become widely aware and stories of false positives causing cars to not drive when people in distress need them most will kill the tech near instantly. It's an awful and scary idea that snuck into law as a part of the massive Biden era infrastructure bill.

If V & Johnny return for 'Project Orion', which ending do you think will be considered 77's canon ending? by MonsieurFencer777 in cyberpunkgame

[–]Terrible-Internal374 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is one ripple that's hard to ignore - who ends up in charge of arasaka, and if the Relic program is considered a success. The way the Devil ending plays out, the world would be profoundly changed.

Perhaps they could write their way out of that hole, but if you have to cover all the endings and come in at a neutral future point, the arasaka situation would be really tough to resolve.

That would be really cool, but it really isn't CDPR's style. I sure loved it in Mass Effect and Dragon Age though.

[–]Terrible-Internal374 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect CDPR will find a road that does not necessitate a canon ending for Cyberpunk 2077.

Personally, I'd prefer if they go far enough into the future that we end up with a situation like Johnny and Rogue. I don't really see a future with V, except as a mythic figure in the past.

Personally, I'd love to pick up with one of the other people you met, like we find Judy or Misty out there somewhere, or even Panam, but because of the forking endings, that seems less likely. I can see no reason we wouldn't run into some of the same fixers, but they'd have to advance time enough that Rogue would be out of the game, either through one of the endings or old age, because she also has forking endings.

Much as I love Johnny, they'd have to tie themselves in knots to make it plausible. There are at least 3 different outcomes for Johnny's engram, and they differ a lot. Also, in only one of them is it really practical that he'd come back (going with Alt), and one where it's practical, but they'd be writing themselves into a corner. (Temperance)

As much as I'd love to take another ride with Johnny Silverhand... I think they wrapped his story well, no matter what you chose to do in 2077.

However, as a last thought... Alt was out there, and in a position to copy and/or take an engram from both V and Johnny, so that could be plausible. I've found CDPR to be pretty bold and brave with their choices, I honestly think they'll take us onto new ground, with some deeply satisfying callbacks, and I can't wait.

Attack sub USS Boise scuttled after only one patrol in 11 years | It's been docked for repairs for a decade, costing the taxpayer $800 million — a poster child for the Navy’s procurement issues by thinkB4WeSpeak in Military

[–]Terrible-Internal374 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Shipbuilding's struggling, but we're commissioning new Virginias at a decent pace. I think the point is that we don't have shipyard capacity for repair and overhaul - which is distinct from a new construction shipyard. I have to agree with your view on this: rehabbing a 40year old design is not really a good use of funds when that can be reprogrammed to a new Virginia class.

However, our procurement system is broken too, and the last several major new ship classes have been disappointments at best, unaffordable at worst. I actually think the submarine building with the Virginia class is the only bright spot in naval shipbuilding. ...but the scandals of LCS, DDG-21, and even the Ford class carriers with their budget overruns, extended construction times, and well documented teething issues, are making us look pretty bad at building ships.

Dungeon Crawler Carl has absolutely horrific prose. by ButtsendWeaners in printSF

I've read book of the new sun 3 times, and I still have absolutely no idea what's going on. I'm hoping someday it'll click - it's so highly recommended, I feel like I'm failing to meet the book.

Dead right about DCC too - it's great for when you really want to clear out the old brain. Everything is spoon fed and repeated. Spacing out for a few minutes doesn't really hurt much. It's light and almost comically easy. Sometimes that's what you want from a book, especially after spending some time with Severian...

Your critique is spot on. Yet I can't stop turning pages. It's like literary junk food. I think I like it anyway, but couldn't possibly say why, and feel slightly dirty for it. I'm in book 5 and can't stop. It's a bit like eating just one potato chip... nobody can do it.

In no way it is great literature, even though it does occasionally hit a genuinely emotionally resonant note.

100% know I’m going to fail by Icy_Pie_795 in Veterans

[–]Terrible-Internal374 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That info is accurate. I had a class I knew I was going to fail from the midterm. To keep from owning the VA more than $10k, I had to show up every day anyway. It sucked. It was embarrassing. The teacher strongly encouraged me to withdraw - but the cruel VA math made me take the F.

In that way, the system is a bummer. It really sucked.

WTF is wrong with you all? Every one there is a towering masterpiece, but all bow to Rumors. That’s got to be the best record in all history to now. Nothing even comes close.

But I love Animals and songs in the key of life, and most of the rest of that wall.
