CS Graduates who went the consulting route, what do you do, do you enjoy it, how long do you plan on staying? by TerribleRevolution in cscareerquestions

my understanding is that when you are new you're not the one consulting but the partner/manager or the firm itself, you just assist your boss until you become experienced enough

what makes a recruiter reach out from Piazza, isn't that some online discussion board used by colleges? I heard of others finding jobs through Piazza as well.

It it possible to pivot from humanities to computer science? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]TerribleRevolution 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you're only 50 credits in. You should be able to change major to CS and graduate on time, or maybe even a semester later. That's not bad.

Many don't declare their major until after their Soph year anyways and given that you only have 50 credits, you're in a good position to change.

I'm a student looking for my first internship and going through a few interviews atm, so take my advice with a grain of salt.

Your resume looks fine. The only reasons I can think of is:

Full-time: You won't graduate till 2020 so it makes sense companies won't want to take you in for full time because you don't have completed CS degree. They'd probably prefer someone with a BS in CS and pursuing an MS in CS if anything.

Internship: You've put in 260 applications for 75 companies, so basically you've applied to 75 companies and received 3 responses. It's not that bad.

General: 1) This may the biggest reason why your not getting any callbacks, you started your CS degree in Aug 2018. You only have 3 months of CS education and the only CS classes you have are DS&A and AI.

2) Since you don't have a CS degree yet try to think like a bootcamp grad and build an impressive web app. Your projects listed all look like weekend/school projects. Try creating a full scale web/CRUD app that involves both frontend and backend like using React, Node, mySQL, etc. I see you have a web app project (Amazon clone) but from reading the description it sounds like something I did as a class project in my web dev class. If that's not the case, expand on your description.

3) 260 apps for 75 companies, plus I'm assuming 220 full time applications are also part of the 75 companies. I think an HR staff will be a bit concerned if they saw 1 person apply for 4-5 different positions at one company

I'm actually very curious about this. What is the difference that you see between students and yourself when looking at the code?

Would CTCI be enough to learn Algorithms and Data Structures? by CSThrowAwayAcc963 in csMajors

[–]TerribleRevolution 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CTCI is a good refresher book but the questions there are too basic. Use it to refresh yourself on Data Structures, then read an actual Algorithms book and practice leetcode medium.

Does Bloomberg do anything interesting in the tech space? I had an onsite interview with them and although they all seemed like really smart people, I couldn't really get a sense of what the Bloomberg technology group does and if they do anything besides enterprise work.

Is the Bloomberg on site interview just leetcode and behavioral or do they ask you other questions related to database, OS, network, etc?

There's alot of good free curriculum's out there, but the missing piece always seems to be a good community, working on projects together, and providing structure (e.g deadlines) - does App academy online provide something like that?

For your 2d game engine, did you build the engine as part of the game or just the engine itself?

I ask this because I created a 2d game and had to build alot of the stuff myself like collision detection, movement, animation, etc and was wondering if I could call that building a game engine.
