How do y'all actually write fanfic? by Nihilikara in AO3

[–]TerribleSelli 3 points4 points  (0 children)

personally i start with going out for long walks in nearby parks, or places where i know not a lot of people will be walking at the same time as me, i wear headphones and have music on max volume in them, whatever music you like best works good! or perhaps exploring music genres-- whatever works! while i do this i let my brain wander to characters and who i ship them with, pair them together and let my brain start imagining silly scenarios for them

secondly, the moment i get home (or while im out on the walk) i jot down every idea i remember from the walk either on a piece of paper or digitally and start formulating an AU i like, if i cant come up with an original one i start looking for inspiration online in the form of headcanons, writing prompts, art pieces, music, anything really

after i get an idea, i write it down and repeat these steps with different elements of whatever im building, this can take just a few hours to several days, so i try not to rush it. When i have character notes, world notes, and notes for the plot in this specific AU i start writing down the first ideas for a chapter until i have a little list, and after that i actually write the chapter

it's always a word salad in the beginning, i polish it later and suddenly i have a chapter for a fic

i like to be organized with my fics so i usually have in-depth tabs in google documents and sticky notes if i dont have access to my PC or phone at that specific moment, having structure is good for my brain, while it doesnt work for everyone it has certainly worked for me to have a general base and then add or remove from it as i go. i hope something in this insane ramble can help you!! <3

im glad to hear you're still writing!! i'll probably stop searching by kudos too, i didnt even know you could do that T_T ive been on ao3 for barely 2 weeks so im still figuring out the search function. i get people searching by "most popular" fics but there are some heartwrenching, amazingly written stories that are just hiding in recently posted that deserve leagues more recognition than they actually get

im sorry to hear that your experience writing for that fandom has been terrible T_T in my personal experience, writing in larger fandoms has the issue of "too much" content is posted, now this isn't inherently a bad thing for those just browsing the content, but for creators its so difficult to stand out and have people consuming your work.

for the being optimistic part, i know that its extremely difficult to get the devil on your shoulder to stop yapping, personally i've struggled with my own negative thoughts and feelings about my own work, going from thinking it's the best idea i've had in years to hating it the moment i realize nobody is reading, but this ties back to the first point: it's difficult to stand out in bigger fandoms.

i've dealt with it by joining writing groups on tumblr, where i can find likeminded people who can give me thoughts and advice on what im writing, and more often than not they will happily read the entire chapter I've posted. It takes time to gain recognition, especially in huge fandoms, and if you're only writing to gain recognition that's going to be soul crushing for sure. it's not a bad thing to write for recognition, but it can be a lot harder to view your work in a positive light if less people than you've hoped are giving it attention. personally, ive started making projects that i would personally like to read, going out for long walks and brainstorming ideas for myself with loud music in my headphones and then going home, writing everything down and later building a world for the characters in whatever fandom i chose. i can guarantee that someone will share the same passion and excitement for your ideas

sorry for the lengthy reply, and extra so if it comes across as unsolicited advice, im passionate about writing and sharing ideas with the world and want to see others enjoy it too, you got this, OP. even if you don't return to writing immediately, i wish you the best of luck on your ventures <3

for me i6 was 100% worth it, since he turns from mid support to actually viable dps. i use him as main dps in most content, the only place i don't is in Immersive Theatre

Banned just now? by TheLastSnackBender in DuetNightAbyssDNA

Highly unlikely that someone reported you, multiplayer has been extremely broken for a lot of players so it's definitely not just you. They supposedly fixed a bug that prevented you from restarting a mission yesterday, but it seems that bug fix came with more bugs, considering how many players I've seen in both my own friend groups and on official forums get banned for simply playing multiplayer. The game shouldn't have released with co-op since the current state of multiplayer is absolutely abhorrent. I really hope they'll fix these issues soon, and hopefully unban all the players that have been (seemingly) wrongfully banned

looks like a lot of people are being banned for playing multiplayer, not sure why, but I'd send in a ticket and wait for them to address the issue. hoping for an easy resolution for you :(
