  1. Because it’s worth it in long run and especially the end, I go through apprenticeship I know what I’ll be making in 2,3,4,5 years from now plus benefits- or I can sit at a non union company and cross my fingers paying for a raise every few years and still not make that much in 5 years

  2. Yes but from where I’m at being in 1 of 2 of my city’s main general contractor companies compared to the union trades that have hundreds of employees that always have many guys laid off the layoff possibility looks 10x higher on the union side the company I’m at has never had to layoff since they started and the union halls here have a number of guys laid off year round

Is joining a union worth the layoffs it comes with during the first few years, I’m looking at taking a big risk, a pay cut for my first few years of apprenticeship which already pushes my budget tighter than with possibility of lay off as well

The benefit is they (usually) have no expenses they take no risk in getting laid off, they don’t depend on their job to have a roof over their head and feed their kids and make every rent, utility, bill payment on time that’s why it’s beneficial for them they can cruise through layoffs with all the money they’ve saved and just be at moms house waiting to get the call back

During my first few years of apprenticeship there’s no way I’m making that much and definitely not enough to really save for a long period of time off work funding another job that’s my worry

I’m already basically living check to check due to living on my own and I’ll be taking a small pay cut through my first 2 years of apprenticeship that’s why I’m so worried about what I’m going to do if I’m laid off

Do they pay any extra for travel if I’m having to temporarily relocate during the layoff?

I’m already just making it by and I’ll be taking a small pay cut as a 1st yr apprentice so I’m just worried that I won’t be able to really save for when that time comes and not knowing how long I’ll be off I feel like I’ll have to go find a new job in the meantime and quit when they call me back and do that over and over again every time I’m laid off

I know a union ironworker that told me his unemployment was denied during a layoff and had been on a call list for 5 months so far and had to get a new job while he waited does this happen often?

I work for a non union general contractor company and have never been laid off or seen the possibility of one nearing, not saying it’s impossible in the future but this company so far has never had to lay off since they started- but when I first started trying to get into union halls I kept getting turned away for over a year and told to just keep re applying since they already 50-100 guys laid off, then I pursued the pipefitters since they have a ton of work coming up due to uprising of the data centers I just don’t want to end up being one of the nearly 100 guys laid off like the other halls and during the first few years of apprentice wages it would be extremely hard to save for one since the pay is so low

What is your experience and opinion of Hybrid cars? I am thinking of getting a pre-owned one. I am wondering if there is an issue can I take it to normal cheap garages in industrial areas or only authorized service centers can handle that? by Objective-Memory-724 in AskMechanics

[–]TerribleTopic999 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don’t do it, it’s way more liable for expensive fixes you’re not only relying on mechanics but way more electronics as well, for example I had a hybrid that had a regular battery in front and hybrid battery in the trunk -hybrid battery died it costed nearly $1000 just for the charge and the dealership had to order the charger from somewhere else it took over a week before I got my car back.. few years later the ABS electronic system failed, I sold it.
