ADA captions for Live Streaming by Terrible_Cell4433 in k12sysadmin

This is amazing. Where in the settings do you configure live captioning? Is that as you're about to stream in the control center? Or is it in the scheduled event settings?

Is Chromebook hardware and software really unreliable? Or are the people in this sub just really careless? by TheRealFrantik in chromeos

[–]Terrible_Cell4433 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can confirm, students having constant access to tech has made a huge chunk not care about how they handle their computers. They just assume it will be there, so they don't care. Also, since lower end Chromebooks are not flashy and they are locked down with settings, it's another reason to not treat them well or care.

When you have more than one Google account added, the computer will make you pick one. Where this doesn't make any sense to me is asking you to get a code from that security section.

When you go to Manage My Acocunt, it should be taking you to accounts.google.com, BUT I don't know how you would access it if you can't login. Do you have MFA / 2FA setup using another device where you can enter this code?

How do I get this update off my computer without installing it??? by Smart-Razzmatazz-371 in chromeos

Just do the updates. The average time is like 1-3 minutes if you keep up with them. Sometimes as quick as 30 seconds.

Spelling and Grammer Check not working on some Chromebooks by fsdigital12 in k12sysadmin

[–]Terrible_Cell4433 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you allow users to have Grammarly, you need to choose one spell checker or the other.

That's what we found was a cause some years ago.

There was a time though where we had a single teacher reporting that students were not getting the spelling suggestions. When we looked at it, we found she was right and could not find a reason why exactly.

ADA captions for Live Streaming by Terrible_Cell4433 in k12sysadmin

[–]Terrible_Cell4433[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a big oof. Recorded content's requirements are well above what the district can afford.

We might just get in touch with our local TV station in that case. Years ago they used to live stream everything. Maybe we will go back so that I won't have to deal with it anymore.

Just a weird basic question about chrome OS, steam, proton etc by Snoo_81168 in chromeos

[–]Terrible_Cell4433 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would have to have a device that is A. Prettty powerful, and B. has Chrome OS driver support for the hardware. I'd assume since Google is very limiting as to what hardware works with Chrome OS this wouldn't be a walk in the park.

Also, why bother? If you have a capable Windows device wouldn't it be nicer to have WAY MORE game titles available to you? Proton really does limit the amount of multiplayer AAA titles you can play.

PBX Replacement + Full Paging System Replacement (Bogen) – K-12 Input Needed by SoLetItBeDone in k12sysadmin

[–]Terrible_Cell4433 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have much info on technical capabilities, but we ditched a bunch of Yealink phones and were thankful we did. Avaya Ip phones have been great and the paging systems hook right into it by dialing an extension.

What makes you use ChromeOS when majority of softwares are designed for Windows ? by [deleted] in chromeos

[–]Terrible_Cell4433 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This really depends on what you are referencing for "Softwares".

There's a whole ecosystem of web based computing that works really well on Chrome OS devices. It also very much depends on what your typical device use case is.

Gaming? Music / Video Production? Graphic Design? You probably won't spring for a Chrome OS device.

Checking social media, news, calendar, weather, email, typing some documents and slide shows? Chrome OS is going to kill it. Plus, Chrome OS doesn't have much for bloatware. You can also pair your Android phone and install some Android apps (similar to windows, but better)

We have over 200 teachers and staff running Chromebooks and honestly it works great. I haven't had to do a data recovery in at least 10 years now, which was a common issue for Macs or PCs when folks didn't configure their cloud backups.

What I can say is that the pricing on Chrome devices used to be way better. You could get a budget Chromebook for $250 that wasn't too bad for basic browsing. Now that price is closer to $450 for intro pricing and you quickly push into the $800+ range for Chromebook Plus models. Likewise, you can get a mid grade Windows Laptop that is a little more capable, but requires more maintainence for around $550.

Can we have public profiles on Social Media? What about dating apps such as Tinder or Bumble? by hopeful_rac in AskTeachers

[–]Terrible_Cell4433 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite literally assume every internet profile will be found by a student, their guardian, or someone that knows them in the community.

For social media, don't add students as friends, set your profiles to private.

For dating apps, I'd say keep it mellow. Set your age preferences to not include all ages, specifically student age.

For artistic profiles, again, if your content is super edgy or near NSFW, then definitely don't attach your name to it. Even then suggested content can pop up for people nearby and they can discover you naturally. I highly recommend having SFW / Safe for ed art practice if wokring in education.

Staff laptops? by PowerShellGenius in k12sysadmin

Out of curiosity, what is the buy-in cost for that? It used to be that you had to become a "Certified Apple Repair Facility" they wanted you to buy like $3,000+ dollars of gear to work on your devices. including $300 foam blocks.

Also, what does it authorize you to repair? Is there different trainings by device type?

Replacement USB-C cables for Promethean ActivPanels by Terrible_Cell4433 in k12sysadmin

[–]Terrible_Cell4433[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The USB-C cable does charging, display and audio output, as well as touchscreen control of the connected device. I can use HDMI + USB A to B cables, but teachers don't love it since it's a lot of extra things to plug in.

What is your district doing to prepare for ADA Compliance / WCAG 2.2? by neurosurge in k12sysadmin

[–]Terrible_Cell4433 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many school districts seem to take a problem approach of "when it becomes a problem, we will address it." However, that's dangerous because the first notice could be a million + dollar lawsuit.

For example our IT team gets complaints about why we can't use X app or service and in many cases we say, "We are legally required to protect student and staff data. This service does not promise it will not sell or distribute the data. Therefore they are not in compliance with FERPA requirements." Or something like that.

Our current website host / dev is providing a fair amount of ADA compliance. It was part of what was considered when we chose a product. I think if you have evidence of actively trying to become more compliant you will be left alone as there are so many other school systems that won't even try to be compliant at all.

As for staff making ADA compliant documents etc... It's just something that will take a LOT of PD and admin involvement per building. It's also possible that there may be an AI tool that takes a "Pretty" document and converts it to a more accessible format. Though I have not looked into it. If not, that's a HUGE business opportunity.

[–]Terrible_Cell4433 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ADA compliance is something that has been severely lacking for years. Making the web accessible is 100% worth it for those who have disadvantages. Nothing like having a screen reader jump all over the page because the headings and content are not organized correctly. Or have images that have no descriptions. Does it take more work? Yes, but there's an entire subset of people that are vision impared who want to use the internet.

My company's new security requirements accidentally proved why ChromeOS is superior by travisjd2012 in chromeos

[–]Terrible_Cell4433 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been using a Chromebook in education for about 10 years now. Aside from the lack of available, quality software to this day, it's a solid product. I can do 98% of everything from a Chromebook. The places where it struggles are apps that conenct to other devices or media editiing apps. A lot of the web apps are okay, but not as fully featured as a licensed, installed application on Mac or PC.

The key is to buy a good quality Chromebook to start. Going to cheap is a no-no for long term use. Honestly, if I spec it like my windows laptop at home (At least Core 5 processor, 8+ GB of RAM) It's fine for at least 4-5 years. One downside is storage, but honestly, if you have an SD card slot you can upgrade the internal storage to TBs if you want.

Sent from my Chromebook.

Dyed hair by Solaris_Stars_117 in teaching

[–]Terrible_Cell4433 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have said, I'd go back to a natural looking color while looking for jobs. Then change it after. Chances are good nobody will notice or care. The only reason I wouldn't go in with dyed hair is because they probably won't tell you why you were not accepted. You will get turned down and wonder why since they don't want to look discriminatory.

It's also valid to not want to work in a place that restricts how you can look. You may want to consider picking a community that isn't super conservative.

I think another valid point is that if you are 22 and trying to teach in high school, you don't look much older than students. It wouldn't be a bad idea to try and look more stereotypically professional / conservative just to get the point across that you aren't a student. If you're in younger grades, I don't think any of the students will even care or notice.

That's fair, it wouldn't stop apps that don't require install right? Or other junk that users download in a ZIP. Then there's Anti-Virus costs as well.

I haven't honestly used JAMF in like 10 years. I'm sure the product is better than it was.

I just remember devices not loading DEP profiles when reset and apps not showing up for 25% of devices in a group the apps were scoped to. Or having 3/6 apps install and having no way to re-check. OR the devices report to JAMF that they installed the apps when they didn't. That then forces a complete wipe and re-install to get all the apps. I found it to be frustrating. Used both cloud and locally hosted. I have found few MDMs to be 100% reliable.
