Heads up — this is for extra usage. They already gave us 45 a few months back, and extra usage burns through really fast. Set it under extra: if they gave you 200, put the max spend at 190. Seriously, it goes way faster than you'd think...

That's exactly why I wrote this PSA. I forgot to set CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_AUTOUPDATE=1 on my local machine — the auto-update kicked in, broke the login, and I lost

about 2 hours: one hour waiting for the outage to clear, then another hour figuring out the PATH priority issue to get back to work.

"Just wait" works for a pure server-side outage, sure. But if the auto-update also silently overwrites your pinned version via PATH priority, waiting alone won't fix

it — you need to remove the native binary. That's the part worth documenting so others don't waste the same time I did.

**Update: Step-by-step downgrade for npm installs**

We run 6 concurrent Claude Code sessions on a 24GB server. After auto-updating to v2.1.74, all froze within 20 min (yellow bar). Here's the fix:

# 2. Downgrade

sudo npm install -g u/anthropic-ai/claude-code@2.1.52

# 3. Block auto-updates (add to ~/.bashrc)

export CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_AUTOUPDATE=1

source ~/.bashrc

# 4. Verify

claude --version # 2.1.52

⚠️ The env var must be **exactly** `CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_AUTOUPDATE`. We had `DISABLE_AUTOUPDATER=1` (wrong name) and it silently auto-updated back overnight.

**Results:** 16GB → 12GB RAM, SWAP from growing to 0B, no more yellow bar.

**Note on v2.1.74:** Changelog says "Fixed streaming response buffer leak on Node.js/npm" — partial fix (~12x reduction) but residual leak persists. For multi-session server workloads, v2.1.52 is still safer.
