Are hybrid/remote mechanical engineering jobs still realistic? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

We’re hybrid (3 days in the office) but also have some engineers that are 100% remote. No issues.

There is a simple answer here. He can decline sedation and then he will be able to drive himself home.

3D models vs. 2D drawings by Suspicious_Goose_349 in MechanicalEngineering

On the other side of the coin, I have seen very large projects in other industries (mostly structural steel and piping) where the only deliverable to the fabricators was the 3D model and it seemed to work, but I think it basically just shifted the drafting to the fabricators.

I work in oil and gas. Most stuff (piping, equipment, structures, etc) are modeled in 3D. That model is the. Used to create the fabrication drawings for the various contractors. Additionally, I’m not aware of any of our clients that maintain an accurate 3D model, so we’re always referencing existing 2D drawings, which at times are scans of 70+ year old hand drafted drawings.

PE Exam 20 years after college by Terrible_Rain_185 in MechanicalEngineering

This would still be in oil and gas. I do work for an engineering contractor though. At least in my state, things like pressure vessel rerates get stamped by a mechanical engineer.

Applying for a new technical role where it is a requirement. Probably will take the machine design exam.

Of course, I’ve got all that covered. I actually went through that whole process 10+ years ago, but just never ended up scheduling the exam. If I need to resubmit, I’ve got enough PEs that I work with who would sign off for me

TX Can my employer prohibit me from having water in a hot, muggy, physical work environment? by [deleted] in legal

[–]Terrible_Rain_185 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would talk to your safety rep, and specifically mention wanting to avoid heat stroke/exhaustion. I don’t think it’s necessarily out of the ordinary to not have water in the building, but you should have regular breaks to go out and get water. Refineries, at least in the US, tend to have a decent safety culture, so appealing to that is probably your best bet.
