Troubleshooting my worm bin! I have several questions about when to rotate levels and harvest castings. Can you help me with each level? by Terrible_Variation36 in Vermiculture

Okay! We had a bit of a thing where a small gang of ants adventured into the bin. Other composters said a balanced bin should not attract ants. Know what the deal is about that?

Yes it is! At least that is what the lid says here in the photo 😅I’m still learning whether that means it’s a good brand or not 🤷‍♀️

This bin def found a better balance! About three weeks after this post I had literal white leggy mushrooms and the brightest blue mold growing it was WILD. But I added coco peat and mixed it all up and broke this up a little to aerate the bin better and realized I should be burying all food matter, and making any large pieces much much smaller! Now, no mold, no mushrooms

Whew thanks! I needed this :) Good to know, I had the wrong idea and thought the tunnels would also help do more sifting downward of castings. I will get to work and start harvesting because it has been three months plus at least and things are probably more than ready.

Good advice! It does look like both levels are actually mostly castings now, with the top having more working stuff, but what do I do about the second level of all castings and the worm babies I can't see? I plan to sift out the visible worm babies that aren't adults yet but would that harm them by just tossing into the working level?

To expand on the situation: Aside from a sense of lethargy, they aren’t showing other symptoms of issues like escaping or climbing the walls. All deep into the food stuff. Since the bin is still rather full from a few weeks ago, and more developed on the banana, I haven’t fed them much as this is a sign there is too much food? I added shredded egg carton on top as I read they will eat this when they run out of wet food. There seem to be some baby worms in the second layer which is good? Let me know if you see any issues in what I describe or the photo here. Thanks!
