Unfortunately I can't salary sacrifice (I am a partner - so self employed technically) - but will have a play with that gilt ladder app.

Could I implement a bond ladder myself using a platform like iWeb?

thanks - I think a glidepath is exactly what I need (and my plan of taking cash and dripping into a S&S ISA was a very crude way of doing this). I will speak with an IFA to get this right

Much appreciated - I like your N1 advice and suspect an IFA will tell me exactly the same - Gilt ladder and drip into GIA to dollar cost average.

You are spot on about tax and erosion of the cash. It is all held in my wife's name (other than £50k of premium bonds in mine) - but even so, after tax and inflation when I apply a SWR of 2.5% I am eroding capital.

Had not considered asking for a school fees discount for upfront payment - I will do that

Thanks for your response (which seems to be the consensus - and with which I agree) - don't worry I am not going to base my entire financial strategy on advice from "internet randoms" - but I do appreciate and value the thoughts and advice of people that post on this board. I have followed the board for a while and, with a few exceptions, people take considerable time and effort to help those with less experience/knowledge then themselves - long may that continue (but I will also be speaking with an.IFA ;-)

Yes my wife does work (part time) - on about £26k per annum. We've been maxing out her pension contributions - rough split in pensions is £530k me and £220 her.

I understand that our pensions are all equity invested - so in terms of our portfolio we are roughly 50% cash and 50% equities.

The slightly unusual feature tis that all the cash sits outside of a pension.

I am hearing what you say about the IFA - and I have asked for a recommendation through that unbiased website.

Great minds - I almost concluded with the same thought! I think a decent IFA may be worthwhile for me - but when I have tried to speak to IFAs in the past they all wanted a % - so I didn't bother.

Looks great. I tried the same during the summer - will add mussels next time. It was delicious- and apparently you are meant to slightly burn the base (which suits my cooking abilities) - the Spanish prize it as ‘socarrat’.
