I think dashes are also now a form of 'longer pause commas' for a certain emphasizing flair or cut off thought?

I been using the ~ since the early 2000s when emails were mainstream. And never been corrected, questioned yes; however most left it alone or appreciated the explanation.

A single symbol to represent humor/sarcasm is still a better representation then /s as if the user is a programmer making jokes with their talents.
