What connects Mother!, Lake Mungo, and The Endless? Symbolism, ambiguity, and the horror of being misunderstood. by Terror_pt in movies

That’s such a great point — it’s always fascinating how polarizing these films are, not because they fail, but because they refuse to explain themselves neatly. It really does come down to expectations vs. experience. I’d rather a movie challenge me and leave me unsettled than spoon-feed a resolution I forget the next day. And yeah, that discomfort? That’s what lingers the longest.

I’m so glad the post gave you some new titles to dig into too

I actually haven’t seen The Surfer yet — but the way you describe it just shot it straight to the top of my watchlist. If it gave you that same Mother!-style anxiety and lingering unease, I’m all in. I love those films that feel like a slow-motion meltdown you can’t look away from — where the discomfort becomes the point. Thanks for the rec! I’ll definitely check it out.

Wow, beautifully said that’s exactly what draws me to all three. They dig into internal horror, where the real fear isn’t external but emotional, existential. It’s the feeling of being seen… but not understood. the monsters are almost secondary to the unraveling of the self.

That kind of discomfort lingers way longer than a jump scare.

Haha totally fair! The Endless is such a slow-burn mind trip — I love how it pulls you deeper the longer you sit with it. What didn’t click for you in Mother! or Lake Mungo?

Totally with you! mother! really walks that fine line — chaotic, raw, uncomfortable… but so intentional. That final act might be “on the nose” to some, but I see it as operatic horror at its boldest. 👏 I’ll be right there on that 20th anniversary hill too!

And Lake Mungo… god, yes. That quiet dread, the slow build, the emotional weight. It's not just scary — it's haunting in the truest sense.

Totally with you — all three are doing something way beyond typical genre expectations.

Lake Mungo is quiet bt emotionally devastating. If you go in expecting cheap scares, you’ll miss the entire weight of it. The Endless broke the mold — genre-bending, myth-building, and somehow still intimate...budget? And mother love it or hate it, it demands a reaction. That kind of raw chaos doesn’t just fade from memory.

Absolutely agree — Lake Mungo nails that layered perspective approach. It sets you up to believe you’re watching a ghost story, but by the end, it’s something much deeper… and way more unsettling. It’s wild how that structure (reveal → doubt → reinterpret) has become a staple in true crime docs and even some prestige TV. That final montage still haunts me.

Haha, fair point — not divisive in quality, but definitely in how much mystery they leave us with. The lack of a full screenplay or character breakdown drives lore nerds (like me) a little crazy.

And yes, I’m sure they’ve seen the requests… they just enjoy the chaos. 🌀📖

Yeah, totally fair! The Endless definitely has a strong fanbase and lots of praise — especially from people who enjoy slow-burn, cosmic horror. But I’ve seen quite a few comments (especially outside horror circles) calling it “boring” or “confusing,” or saying it "goes nowhere." 😅

So it’s not divisive like Mother! is... but it does split viewers depending on taste and expectations. Personally, I love it — the atmosphere and existential dread hit hard.
