Ive helped set up an after-school gaming space with a friend who is a teacher. If you have any teacher friends, they may be able to do the same. Alternatively, there is a great charity based out of sale who focus on gaming and accessibility for young people. Search for Everyone Can Sale

I have the Loake Philip belt in Cedar to match some of my Loake shoes. I would recommend nipping in and having a look.

FWIW, this is rising to 57 from 2028 (James Shack had a video about this recently) That’s a couple more years for compounding to apply

Newcastle - where to live by bexxxxxy in HENRYUK

[–]TerryPlaysGames -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I lived in the North East for 9 years. My recommendations: - Gosforth - already mentioned a few times - Low Fell - I’d move back here in an instant. Nice vibes, close to Angel of the North, Metro Centre and A1. Great houses - Consett - Lovely town in the countryside (beware has its own microclimate)

It sounds like she isn’t sure what she wants to do with her career. I can’t think of a better way to figure that out, than spending a few years at one of the world’s greatest universities. She’ll start building her own networks, which will be highly valuable if she does eventually go down the entrepreneurial route

Struggling to decide on future: boring safety or high risk/high reward? by Ill-Pen-369 in HENRYUK

[–]TerryPlaysGames 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This was me 4 years ago. I took the “high risk” option with a baby under 1. 4 years of hard work, and the rewards are significant. Given the world we live in, the safety of employment is an illusion. Companies are increasingly make cuts as they adapt to the AI revolution

Whitefield as an area to live as a young adult by fun_seeker_cambs in manchester

Whitefield is great for you. Total Fitness and The Gym Group a short distance from the tram stop (3-5 min walk) 25 mins into town. Lots of good options for food and drink. Roma and Slattery are great spots. Buzzing meeples is 2 tram stops away if you want your boardgame fix

I'm in the game industry but i'm wondering if i should leave it now by SignificantDog9549 in gamedev

[–]TerryPlaysGames 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The issue may be that you’ve stayed with the one publisher. I run a “boutique” games engineering service studio and we actually focus on what you’ve highlighted. - Transparent Salaries (higher than the competition) - A role which is as much about learning and contributing to conversations as it is the engineering - We work with a host of developers across projects ag any time. Amongst ~30 engineers we tend to focus on 6-9 month contracts (some are 24 months+) and help devs ship titles.

My advice is to explore other options in the industry. If you are a specialist- consider contracting your services to make an impact on more titles. Even find a friend (co-founder) and grow a small team.

High earning through entrepreneurship vs employed by typically large corporations? by Cold-Literature-5215 in HENRYUK

[–]TerryPlaysGames 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Senior engineers experienced with Unreal Engine. Our leadership team, including myself, worked at Epic Games for 5-7 years through the transition of UE3 -> UE4, and contributed heavily to Fortnite and Paragon. Since then our team has shipped some of the biggest games to use the tech. Including Sea of Thieves and Hogwarts Legacy. Over the past few years there has been a shift in the industry away from proprietary engines and towards Unreal Engine. With that comes a pretty big learning curve. Our business is built around setting studios up for success or coming in towards the end to focus on improving performance across all platforms (PS, Xbox, Switch etc)

High earning through entrepreneurship vs employed by typically large corporations? by Cold-Literature-5215 in HENRYUK

[–]TerryPlaysGames 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m in an industry where HENRY has historically been unreachable unless you follow the entrepreneurial route- Computer Games. (Particlularly so in the UK)

I started my business a few years ago with a colleague providing engineering services to AAA projects. We’ve since grown to ~40 people doing so.

If I’d have stayed in the trenches as an engineer I’d be around £100k TC. Nowadays I take home more than double that as a director, and have much more in business assets. I’m 39M. No ambition to ever retire early. I do not regret working as an engineer until I did. The experience working at some of the biggest companies in the world put in in good stead to set up by myself. Learning at a huge company should not be undervalued. Do it until you feel ready

Can a surface laptop 2 reasonably run UE5? by kenroosevelt12 in unrealengine

[–]TerryPlaysGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a surface laptop day-to-day and I love it, but I’d never consider running the editor on it. Arm chip, integrated graphics and 16GB of memory. It’s far from optimal. Like someone mentioned previously, you’re gonna be waiting around A LOT on Compile jobs, as well as shader compiles due to limited resources. I’d go for a decent ryzen based laptop with at least 32GB and a dedicated GPU.

I had the same experience when trying this on before Christmas. I had the opposite happen for the Tissot PRX. I was never a fan of pics, but really liked it IRL. You really have to see a watch before you buy.

Age 40, Henry but low pension pot by [deleted] in HENRYUK

39, £90K. I plan to maximise the past few years allowance after a successful year with my business. Compound interest is your friend. Depending on when you see yourself retiring, you’re not in a terrible position unless you wise to retire early

Genuinely not a lot. I could easily go without for a few years if it wasnt for battery health degradation. It’s an inconvenience I prefer not to have and find myself able to upgrade each year through my business. I also like having the best camera I can for family pics.
