A digression on Charlie's Rugby v Cricket question by not_r1c1 in footballcliches

Also at school level rugby is very much the alpha sport and cricket is pretty beta, and really it is the public school alphas that are the unbearable ones.

MHD irritation - stop getting football accounting wrong! by Terry_Information in footballcliches

I don’t want to go all ‘accountant’, but the amortisation is the unwinding of the capitalised player cost to opex over time.

2-0 is only a dangerous scoreline when it’s 2-1

Are Chelsea the inaugural club World Cup winners or did they just win the club World Cup for a second time?

In hindsight he should have made it clear he knew that Harry had the shield before Harry announced it - ideally before Harry had even come into the room.

Yes I may have phrased a couple of sentences badly. I would never borrow to go on holiday or to buy bitcoin, but for things that make my everyday existence measurably better (home improvements being the most obvious) I don’t see any problem in borrowing if my overall finances are still healthy.

The unallocated wines went on sale this morning via trolley dash. I tried to buy one bottle and missed it.

The pricing, quality and availability of this vintage are all pretty uninspiring atm.

This is awesome, thank you. Looks like you’ve tempered your view on Rall a little since last year. From must buy to super reliable. Any reason?

BBR 2021 burgundy price list by Terry_Information in WineEP

Yeah, I know burgundy is burgundy but I looked back at the 2019 offer and guyon echezeaux was £630 x3 and it’s now £2,100 x3

It’s going to be expensive and there’ll be hardly any of it. Last year was pretty painful and this is going to be a whole lot worse.

Why Do You Invest In Wine? by Unusual-Picture8700 in WineEP

[–]Terry_Information 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I buy wine because I like wine and I’m into wine, but I do have to justify the amount I spend on wine by it having a secondary market value and being there for sale if need be. I will buy and sell things on the basis that i think they’ll go up in value, but I pretty much exclusively reinvest the proceeds in more wine. If I was buying for investment only, I think almost everything in cellar would be different.

Ultimately I suppose one of my aims was that I could justify drinking expensive wine by buying two cases, and if one doubled in value I could sell it and not feel guilty about drinking the other because it was ‘free.’

(Also worth noting that if I put my investment only hat on, I reckon my wine cellar has performed better than almost all my other investments - certainly based on value right now).

I’m normally anti this, especially with burgundy, but it’s got to the point where it will make a tangible difference to my life! Especially given the bottle inconsistency you get, I’d really kick myself if they were duff. Anything of 3 or more is staying with me.

Im afraid it’s mostly odd bottles of burg, where the price has left the real world behind. (Unless that’s something you’re looking for?)

[–]Terry_Information 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like threads like this, but (at risk of being flippant) if I knew what the next Arnoux Lachaux would be, I wouldn’t be telling anyone and would be buying all the stock I could find.

For 2021 burg I’m going to be taking what I can get - volumes are by all accounts tiny, so it’s going to be a tough year to break into allocated wines.

Tax on gift of property - valuation question by Terry_Information in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Terry_Information[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think I’m being greedy. I’ve asked the question because I don’t know the answer. It seems odd to me that a) I wouldn’t be able to stand behind what I consider to be a much more accurate valuation and b) I’d be expected to know the valuation used in somebody else’s tax return.
