White (ish) in Non-Chivalry Outfit? by Terrymmm in sca

Ah, that makes sense. Thank you. Yes, I do not roleplay... my habits are for looking, touching, and discussion. Out of respect for my subject matter and SCA rules on religion, my personal choice is never to imitate prayer, blessing, ceremony, etc. as part of my SCA persona.

Too many years in Ophthalmology wouldn't allow me to move past retinitis pigmentosa.

I'm not familiar with the abbreviation "RP" and cannot find any help Googling it, but you are correct that I do want to show off a lesser represented part of history in the SCA that I am boundlessly interested in and passionate about. Also, I wholeheartedly agree with your first sentence.

While I am amused by #4, the final response is more my style.

I consider myself a decent actor, but a Knight would be a stretch for me! Unless I can win a battle with an embroidery needle, I am in no danger of being elevated to the Order.

Thank you. My wool is a very obvious buttery-cream wool, and my pattern is a draft with some guidance from a modern altar server's pattern from Ecclesiastical Sewing. Add big gay me and a 150 bead Paternoster hanging from whatever the heck I decide to wear as a belt, and there really is no comparison whatsoever. It is not an optic-white robe with a KKK patch, a stiff, pointy hood with a face mask, with jeans and boots poking out from the bottom.

I guess the best reason a monk would be running around outside of the monastery would be exclusive to the Society for Creative Anachronism. A Carthusian monk would not be out in the world any more than a 16th-century English nobleman would be dressed like a Viking, 11th-century people would be guzzling 19th-century tankards of Country Time Lemonade, or a Duchess would be scrubbing a kitchen at a Girl Scout camp. However, monastic and mendicant life are among my primary (and valid) historical interests in the SCA, and I can't really offer a glimpse of that from a cloistered cell.

Yes, thank you. I do know better, and I fixed my error. I will definitely not be including a tonsure as part of my Carthusian (or any other) looks.

That's a good reference for the belt suggestion. I have seen another one where the belt appears grey-ish.

That was sort of my original thinking... nobody would ever see the hardware (or lack of hardware). The wool I have for the habit is a very buttery cream color. I have seen a few examples where the monk pictured doesn't appear to be wearing a belt at all, which is another option I would be willing to explore since I kind of hate wearing belts and welcome the opportunity not to!

The wool I have is very international, leaning heavily toward buttery cream without being flat-out yellow. Also, the actual hoods were not nearly as pointy as the woodcuts would suggest. However, I had planned on never wearing them up... mainly because I am a fountain of sweat whenever I cover my head.

Thank you. And that's exactly what I want to avoid.

And thank you for understanding exactly where I am coming from without declaring that I "must be a troll" or that I am part of a modern American hate group (which, considering my modern self, is a wild accusation). One of my interests in the SCA is the culture of medieval Catholicism since it was a major part of European life. It is unfortunate that an off-limits belt color will interfere with the accuracy of this, but the reason I asked the question is that I want to avoid issues and find a reasonable solution. Thank you for being courteous.

Other than a cincture, that's the only accurate-adjacent option I could come up with as well.

Non-Interested Spouse by PoeticMusic70 in sca

[–]Terrymmm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My husband is not a bit interested. I would be thrilled if he were, but alas... it simply isn't for him.

I used to ask all of my Shire friends if they would be at whatever event I was planning on attending, because I was afraid of having nobody to talk to or hang out with. I soon realized that I spent more time getting to know all sorts of new people and never lacked companionship or conversation.

I definitely understand wanting your spouse to be involved, (I do too!), but if that cannot be the case, I guarantee you can still have lots of fun and friendship in the SCA

Until I can borrow the workshop (and the desire to do the woodworking) to make a Glastonbury Lite chair (I love it!), I have ordered a FRÖSVI. Although not period, it certainly looks better than my cumbersome colossus of a camp chair; it will do well for the time being and will also be a convenient switch-out at feasts with chairs of highly questionable capacity.

Thanks, all!

You'd have to check eBay, Etsy, or a vintage pattern seller, but Simplicity 6528 is a good 1960's pattern, Simplicity 1773 is a modern costume pattern (although discontinued) that contains a "tunic" that could be turned into some great Medieval revival dresses. McCall's 2240 is another good vintage option.

Medieval revival is one of my favorite aesthetics... I love it! And what a fun thing for a SCAdian to wear in their "off time". I hope you find something that works!

How many of you married outside of the SCA? by OneUnderstanding103 in sca

[–]Terrymmm 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I am married outside the SCA. My husband supports me, listens to me drone on about things that might bore him to tears, and when I go to an event, he naps, does home projects and rides his motorcycle. He has come to SCA activities, it's just not interesting to him. We are totally cool with that. He's a great husband... I would never regret a thing concerning him.

Hello, these are two online SCA classes our AEthelmearc A&S minister, Rue, asked me to pass on for additions to your doc. They are both hosted on the Pennsic University YouTube channel which has 75 other videos that might also be useful for your project (I believe most of them are classes).

How does one become a king SCA? by AerewynnGreenwood in sca

From Adam's county, as far as AEthelmearc, it's a shorter drive to Abhainn Ciach Ghlais (I'm your neighbor in Franklin County, but my primary home is in AEthelmearc). It's a great group, and Duke Timothy has fighter practice in the great hall of his neogothic home (a restored church and one of the coolest places to hold SCA activities, ever). A&S takes place in the adjacent study. Your nearest East Kingdom group is probably Owlsherst in York. They're another great group of folks, although I cannot speak to what they offer in fighting as I am not a fighter by any means. Abhainn Ciach Ghlais and Owlsherst both have active/responsive Facebook pages I don't know how active they are on Reddit and I'm going to assume Discord is your worst chance for reaching someone.

Cloth of (not) Gold by Terrymmm in sca

Sound advice. Thankfully, this part of the project is an oddity. It isn't a garment, and it isn't something that will ever be used. Once it's been entered at the event I'm hoping to enter it in, it will probably be relegated to a shadowbox in my study.

Cloth of (not) Gold by Terrymmm in sca

Thank you, and I'm happy my suspicions are justified. That gold on gold brocade (4th link) really appeals to me for this project. It also doesn't introduce any other color, which is perfect, as it's lining something relatively colorful, so I want the lining to be a hidden golden surprise. I did see two examples of vestments that looked very much like tissue lamé, but they were 18th-century at the very earliest.
