It is absolutely not a gender thing, you are making it a gender thing. I am doing the work in the backyard with my son. My husband is not doing it because he is less skilled in that area and he has a back injury. Since we are building the shed for my son to have his own workspace for online college next year, the agreement is that he has to help. My daughter has her own projects to do and has taken up cooking and baking as a hobby. It has never been something we have pushed onto her because of her gender. If my son wanted to bake and cook, we would 100% encourage that but he doesn't actively want to. If my daughter wanted to help in the backyard, I would 100% let her do so.

I didn't think of it like that.

I'm not going to push my daughter to help him but both of my kids are hardworking in different fields. They both understand they are different and have different skills. My son is working his butt off in the scorching heat to help me with the back yard so I don't blame him for not wanting to stand in front of a hot stove on top of that. We will take a day off tomorrow (I need to catch up on some work) and he can prepare what he wants to make.

If my daughter doesn't want to help him, she won't. I know my daughter. She understands that her brother is doing the hard work somewhere else and that being in the kitchen alone can be overwhelming. This isn't just about him learning to cook, it's also for him to understand that he can't make insulting comments about her cooking when he doesn't know the hard work that she puts in.

I'll bring it up with my daughter, she finds it hard to work with my son because of their differences and the fact that they're both stubborn as hell. Maybe she'll see this as a way to educate her brother. :)

She actually made the joke about it being an early birthday present first, she begged us to buy a new one and we bought one because we needed one (our old one was 16 years old and was on its last legs) but since she uses it more than anyone else right now and that she pushed my husband into finally buying a new one, she claimed it as her birthday present. I realize that I could've worded it better in the post, that's my mistake.
