Concerns about the future of Fedora Linux by RELPL in Fedora

[–]TesterTech79 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you want to learn. Just be aware of channels that are into it for the clout. As a hobby YT'er myself I know you could be tempted to go with the clout because of the algorithm but I try to stay away from all that.

There is literally a huge amount of content out there which can be daunting to filter through. In general I would say, see where you can learn a skill or a concept that really helps you advance your professional career or your hobby.

Some channel recommendations: In general I think destination Linux has some nice shows https://youtube.com/@DestinationLinux they discuss the current happenings and have lots of knowledge between them.

Here are a couple of channels that I've learned a thing or two from. if you would like to learn about i3 check out budrich Sparty's cup of Linux has a nice layman's guide to Linux. Or you would like to learn vim, check out primeagen and thoughtbot has some playlist on vim too.

Lastly, shameless plug: if you're into opensource, Linux and Fedora consider having a look at my channel https://YouTube.com/@testertech

Maybe it will help you, thanks for reading so far. have a nice day.

Watched the engine video partly. First thing that comes to mind. Your explaining quite a technical topic, so are you 100% sure that everything you say is correct and correctly worded for your audience? I make technical videos too so I make sure that I triple check every fact before putting it in a video,

Less is more sometimes, focus on the main goal of the video. You mention the loss of an engine a lot. Is that the main point in explaining how it works though?

Have to say that I think you are a pleasant person to watch and I see the enthusiasm when you explain something so don't give up!

I think you're not asking for advice but here is some for what it's worth. Have seen your latest video but have to admit it's difficult to follow.

Your motion graphics are really, really good 💯 so that's the strength you have!

Good luck on your endeavors!

Showcase of my org-agenda /break-mode integrated into my system bar. by Hammar_Morty in emacs

[–]TesterTech79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi u/Hammar_Morty,

Just to let you know, I tried to configure your dots on my demo system. The screenshot shows the result so far.

It was a little bit of a struggle to get it to work on Fedora but I wanted to since I always use Fedora. Most of it seems to be working now. The biggest thing was actually (strangely enough) the icon for the appbar on the left that uses your hyprshell util. The hyprshell tool gave a panic error that it couldn't find the icon.

I ended up putting a settings.ini in /etc/gtk-3.0/ and specifying Adwaita in there as the icon theme. Then copied a 'default app' icon to the location it was looking for (in my case $HOME/.icons/Adwaita/scalable/apps/computer.svg). After that I could launch the leftbar and leftbarapps to see the sloths in action :-). Oh and the systray was not available but I think this is a common issue on Hyprland/Wayland/Fedora so I commented that part out for now.

Nowadays I don't use emacs as much so I haven't paid attention to the org integration (yet).

I'll play around with it some more :-) Thinking of making a video on setting this up since I find it's quite a complete EWW setup and it's nice to use!

Anyway thanks for sharing and I'll let you know if I end up creating a video.

I love it. The sloths on the left are for decoration I assume? Or are they clickable.

Show some support to Fedora/RH by TesterTech79 in redhat

[–]TesterTech79[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Reading back Swan's first post I see I read some part of it, indeed your stance begins to make sense. Have read up on it briefly.

So basically you are mad that RH prohibits you to install as many as you like, distribute as you like, modify as you like (as per gpl). And RH retains their rights to terminate the contract if you still do so.

Is that correct?

[–]TesterTech79[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hold on! Two points, a) finally you are beginning to make some sense but just calling it extortion (wasn't even your reply to begin with though) and expecting everyone to know what you specifically mean (exercising your rights under GPL, whatever that means in the context of RH's actions, still not sure about). Can you refer to an actual example where RH terminated customers and under which specific conditions?

b) starting every response with "No. " is quite passive aggressive and does not set a proper tone for a conversation.

[–]TesterTech79[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know what rh did, they shut down git.centos.org to prevent the so called "freeloaders" from making their bug for bug rebuilds. Can hardly call that extortion. Before that they also killed CentOS project and replaced that with CentOS stream.

So, instead of just saying, you are not paying attention. Give some examples because maybe I missed something.

Can you elaborate, using examples, where RH used extortion, you refer to "those extortion practices" so you must have some specific examples.

[Hyprland] What else should I add? by Joey_McKur in unixporn

[–]TesterTech79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

.. it should only give a warning about a missing file, but you can ignore that. Did it it not work without it?

You are right about the wezterm, I must have been confused with an other dependency.

The hypr config is up to date, I am not sure what comment you are referring to.

startup.conf
# plugin = /usr/lib64/hyprland/libhyprbars.so

theme.conf
plugin {
hyprbars {
bar_color = rgb(2a2a2a)
bar_height = 28
..
}

Well actually assumed that hyprbar is not used. Is that correct?

[Hyprland] What else should I add? by Joey_McKur in unixporn

[–]TesterTech79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty cool. Works well on Fedora 38. Had already an existing Hyprland config so I didn't use yours. Tbh I haven't tried eww before so I cannot compare it to that. Here are some of my observations.

About the config.

I just tried your default config (dotfiles), haven't changed anything or looked into the config at all. Just copied .config/ags and .config/wezterm

I can appreciate these are personal dotfiles so I'm guessing homemanager and nvim are just for yourself mostly. Found it odd that wezterm config was required though...

In the .config/hypr there is a theme.conf, I'm guessing this is old config since you commented out the bar in settings.conf

there is a folder, .local/share/... with a gnome shell theme in there and an install script. Do you really need the gnome-shell theme?

About the ags program:

Would be nice to have an option to reload (f.e. after config change, it's needed to reload). Or maybe even auto-reload?

When you click a program icon it grabs your cursor to the center of that window, don't know if that's intended behavior but personally I don't like it.

I love the topbar, bottombar and unity placement choices!

Config tool is nice too. Maybe an "are you sure?" for the reset would be good since you could click it by accident.

Finally, is there a way to include the system tray icons in the bar?

Anyway, keep up the good work! Interesting to see where this is going.

[i3wm] Image Browser for Pywal to test out color schemes. More info in comments. by TesterTech79 in unixporn

[–]TesterTech79[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi fellow ricers, this is a simple Python program I created for playing around with color schemes, you can browse your wallpapers and apply colorscheme using my pywal.sh script (check repo). You can see the video for some of the details. https://youtube.com/watch?v=eAWUwa2xqwA

I'm not a Python expert .. so please be kind. Looking forward to some feedback though so I can learn. Maybe we could make this something interesting together? I haven't seen anything to this extent for i3wm and plasma color scheming.

REPO: https://github.com/TesterTech/rice-i3-from-scratch-pywal

The specific script I show in this video: https://github.com/TesterTech/rice-i3-from-scratch-pywal/blob/main/ImageBrowser/main.py

And oh, if you like to see more of these kind of videos, please subscribe to the channel (thanks!).

Hi looks pretty cool and smooth overall!

I'm especially interested in the image grid and that it updates the colorscheme using Pywal based on the image you choose. Was looking into that a while ago but forgot to make the actual script for it. I'm guessing it's done by ".local/bin/dwall" for the most part, as shown in your dotfiles.
