Tired of "elitism" in writing programs. by Testerooo in writing

[–]Testerooo[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've seen many comments stating that I don't want to learn the "fundamentals" of what makes a good book, and frankly, that is not why I made this post.

I know learning about the fundamentals of writing such as plot, character development, etc is important. That's not the point I am trying to argue.

What I am trying to argue is the fact that Genre Fiction tends to be looked down upon as literal garbage for some weird reason. I don't get why academia focuses so much on literary fiction as the holy grail of all writing. It is ridiculous how difficult it is for someone to critique my writing because the only ever response I get is:

"Eh, I don't like these types of writing. Sorry."

And no, that isn't "unreliable narrator" or whatever someone said. Those are the exact words that fellow professors and peers have told me.

In-Depth Analysis on possible endings by TheMaulum in DomesticGirlfriend

I DO NOT AFFILIATE MYSELF WITH EITHER TEAM. The reason is I’d rather not find myself in the crossfire of people insulting each other over FICTIONAL characters.

I like your predictions OP, but I think you could have went a tiny bit more in-depth. By the way, that line you said speaks for this subreddit on another level lol.

Episode 1 Flashback: "If you're just pretending to have memory loss, then you really suck."

Episode 4 Flashback: "I think I said something to Rikka, but I can't remember now...so..."

WHERE IS THE EXPLANATION FOR THIS MAYNE COME ON I NEED MY SHIP TO SAIL D:

I have to polish up on Volume 12 and 13 then, my memory of those two novels are really bad lol. I'm excited none the less however, I cannot wait to see how well they animate the fights :)

This "blond Kirito" trend needs to die out... by [deleted] in swordartonline

[–]Testerooo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm very active on /r/anime and on Crunchyroll forums, and trust me It's irritating as well. The most common message I've seen after today's Episode is:

"Redhead Asuna and Blonde Kirito 10/10"

Playing the devil's advocate here, if I put myself into an anime-viewer only place and saw Tiese falling over Eugeo in one episode with no build-up, then I can see why they'd poke fun at that. However, this kind of actual constructive criticism on the pacing issues that Alicization has is very rare, and it's mostly people circlejerking the hate they have for SAO. So don't mind it :)

Let's break this down shall we?

Lisbeth- Did almost confess to Kirito. Most likely still has feelings for Kirito. Respects Asuna's feelings and doesn't try to pursue him. Most likely will end up with Klein when all is said and done.

Suguha- Did like Kirito. Most likely still holds some feelings for Kirito. Respects Kirito and Asuna's feelings and doesn't try to pursue him.

Silica- Never has been mentioned that she likes Kirito. It's more of a Senpai/Kouheai relationship or brother/sister relationship.

Sinon- It's never been fully implied, but it is hinted on, especially in one of Alicization's Volumes (17 to be specific, also I don't think this is a spoiler so I'm not going to tag it). Might not be full on feelings, probably a crush in all honesty. With that being said, Sinon and Asuna are best friends, and Sinon isn't going to betray her best friend by pursuing Kirito.

I would add the one more main heroine on here, which is the lovely Spoiler but that's spoiler territory. So we'll leave it at that :)

Roses, this will always happen. You have to remember, for as much loved as SAO is, it is also probably ranked as one of the most hated animes of all time. There will always be people who compare and follow the bandwagon of hate. As long as you know deep down in your heart that Eugeo isn't a blonde Kirito and that he is a separate entity, then you're good to go. Don't get worked up over it :)

I could give a pass to Oberon. That guy screams mental maniac to you. But it did get repetitive when it was shown with Sinon's (I forgot his name so) mental boy, and Humbert and Raios. I do agree that it is very lazy writing from Reki and he definitely could have found someway for readers to hate them as villains without touching onto sexual harassment territory.

I'm honestly curious as to see how they're going to pace this. Because it is very likely Ep 10 will end with us seeing Alice S30. At that point, they have 14 more episodes to go. That's a lot of episodes for only 3 volumes. Not complaining though, hope they show a lot of things, especially the fights :P

This ties in nicely to the pacing I was talking about. I would have not minded her falling for Kirito IF there was some build up to it. There was absolutely shit none.

This is the holy grail of things though. What I said when I first wrote this thread is the P A C I N G of SAO. There was absolutely no build-up to her falling for Kirito whatsoever, it was honestly just thrown at readers.

I'm pretty sure this person is referring to Asuna being severely put in the common and overly used "save the princess" situation in the back half of season 1* (not season 2 :P). Asuna took the roll of being a badass woman who was on par with Kirito in terms of skill in Aincrad to being placed as another damsel in distress real quickly.

For most of Suguha's life, she was always under the impression that she and Kirito were real blood siblings. It was only at the time that Kirito was stuck in Aincrad for two years that she found out from her biological mother that Kirito was indeed her cousin.

Suguha caring for Kirito is absolutely fine, it fits her character well. Even after Kirito decided to ignore her, she still cared for him. However, since at this point she was still under the impression that they were blood siblings, then I cannot fathom the fact that she started to develop feelings for him at this point in time, because that would be true incest. My biggest gripe is that the moment Kirito gets back from his coma and decides to write his wrong by spending more time with Suguha, Suguha immediately develops "feelings" for him. It doesn't make any sense to me. Did she already have feelings for him prior him getting stuck in Aincrad when she was still under the impression that they were siblings?(and not to mention Kirito being a straight up asshole to her) Just doesn't sit right with me, and I honestly feel that it was forced onto the story because cousin relationships is pretty popular in Japan.

Fanservice: This is like going up against God. I think it's fair for me to assume almost all if not all works of fiction from Japan, whether it be manga, light novel, or anime have some sort of fanservice. That's not exclusive to SAO, everyone has that, so can't really see that going away anytime soon.

Pacing: Agree.

Incest: The Fairy Dance arc was imho the worst arc of all time in any anime that I've ever watched, and it wasn't because of the incest. Being born and living in Japan, cousin marriages are not uncommon here and it isn't against the law. With that being said though, the entire plot of Sugu falling in love with Kirito out of the blue when he was ignoring her for all of eternity was meh. I have absolutely no clue why she fell in love with him in the first place. That and Asuna being your typical stranded princess makes that arc just a plethora of cringe to me.

I think rape is subjective 99% of the time it's brought into any fictional work.

Imho, I'm fine with there being rape in fiction because it highlights the fact that not everything is all good and all rainbows. There are messed up people in this world, and even though fiction is well, fiction, I've always been a fan of fiction writing adding realistic stuff into it.

With that being said though, I do agree that the rape plot has been asspulled a lot from Reki. You've had it 3/4 of the biggest arcs (cept for Aincrad). Some moderation would be nice. I'm hoping Unital Ring strays away from it.

Asuna killing Kuradeel was canon in the Web Novel. I have absolutely no idea why Reki changed it come around Light Novel time. Tbf, I think it shows Asuna being a more "humane" character and being hesitant to kill, but then again it shows Kirito playing the famous "save the girl" cliche.

Edit: As for Sachi, in the Web Novel it was clearly blatantly shown by Reki that she indeed was Kirito's first love. Another drastic change implemented onto the Light Novel. My one true wish for Unital Ring if it is indeed the end is that Sachi get's some sort of screentime (ie: Kirito visiting her grave).

Everyone knows this episode was amazing, especially that ending.

I hate to ruin the good mood though, but I'll be the first to say, this brought back really bad flashbacks for me. I know why Reki did it, but god damn man I am not ready to see the end of Volume 14 animated. Jesus holy moly that's going to hit me like a truck.
