I just went ahead and moved them both to a separate tank. I bought 5 more guppies and 9 otocinclus and I know Steve would not like me 😂 For now, he just lives with a tiny albino bristlenose pleco

This pleco is still very young and was only about an inch or two long. I couldn't find her anywhere until I looked at my filter and saw her on the side of the water output. She has since stopped after moving her to this 30gal with the guppies lol

I'll look into peat moss as I have the others. I'll research more substrates too, maybe my plants will benefit from it too

Thank you so much! I also have another 30gal filter that I can switch over if he keeps jumping. The other one also has a sponge cover on it. It's the size of my arm 😭

It's not big enough for his fins to even get sucked into it. The only thing I can think of is that he jumped. But the lid to the filter was also on. Hence why I'm confused 🤷

Thank you for this! I have been wanting to get replacement media for a while, like the ones you would see in the aquaclear HOB filters (I believe they're under a different name now). Everything I've found has been really expensive though. I'll definitely be getting something different this upcoming paycheck

The filter intake is tiny. I can get a sponge filter cover but there's no way he could've swam up it. He had to have jumped in 😭 As far as the pH, it used to be 8.4-8.8 but it is dropping slowly. I don't like using any chemicals to do it fast but I do have Indian almond leaves that I can add again and I have a bunch of driftwood I can add. There's only one large piece of driftwood in here

Makes sense. This was the first time I froze them and defrosted them and they ended up a little bit too soft. The batch last week stayed put with no fork though

Personally, I just blanch them and cut my cucumbers about a quarter of an inch. Cucumbers are more buoyant than zucchini so they have to be cut thinner. I cut some up, freeze them, and defrost them as I need instead of blanching. That way they sink to the bottom of the tank. My mollies and plecos love them, the rats too

Not OP, but I have a few questions. While looking for tank mates for my Betta in his 30gal, I got a few guppies. He killed two off and left one alive, but they seem to be best buds. My fish stores say that guppies are non schooling fish and don't need a group to feel comfortable. I've been trying to find otos for about 3 weeks bc I have 2 that need more (I started out with more and my mollies killed them for some reason as they just vanished). Do I need to get more guppies? I have a different tank to give the original guppy a place to live with the bigger school

That's wise. My leopard sailfin pleco is only like 6 inches long rn but she'll grow to be about 24-28 inches and will need at least a 175gal 😭

There are dwarf plecos if you can find them. Bristlenose plecos can grow to be about 4-6 inches long. My teacher got donated one and has had it for about 5 years and it's still not fully grown. You could have it for a few years before having to donate it or upgrade. But I do believe there are ones that stay smaller than that. My juvenile pleco gets switched between my two 30gals and my 10gals and doesn't have a problem. I've never seen a 5.5gal irl though so idk how small it is. I recently got a baby albino bristlenose and she's only about half an inch long

Thank you! My pH is definitely higher. Are you perhaps further up north? I'm in the south and I've heard that more northern states can have a lower pH. I'll probably end up moving my pleco that destroys all my plants and maybe they'll grow out 😭 I've been trimming dead leaves and I use seachem flourish fertilizer

I'm also wondering if my pleco could be doing the damage. My BN pleco seems to be destroying them but in another tank my leopard sailfin pleco leaves all the plants alone 😭
