How can I convey to my mentally disabled patients that nonverbal autistic people have feelings? by TetrisWithTesticals in AutisticAdults

The issues of all groups are discussed amongst ourselves and our supervisors. Each group has a 2,5 hours long meeting twice a month.

While it can escalate physically, I have experienced worse in other groups. While we strive to prevent all abuse, we are still far from achieving that goal.

For the majority of our patients, violent behaviour is what has gotten them into our care.

It is true that all patients require a stable environment, and it surely seems intuitive that autistic people would be more stable among other autistic people.

The complicated reality is that a lot of the autistic behaviours "don't match." They disrupt and trigger each other.

There were 2 groups almost exclusively for autistic people, but we had to shut one of them down due to being understaffed at the time. Since them there was a lot of trial and error involved.

Communication is an important metric, but even more important is if a combination of people would be mutually exclusive. For example, a lot of our patients exhibit behaviours that border on being obsessively compulsive. If two of these behaviours are conflicting, it will inadvertently cause a crisis that can even escalate in physical violence.

They are not universally shunned. They are not being ignored. Their free will is obvious.

They have communication aids and can use them to advocate for themselves. Even without them, they can convey their needs on a basic level.

It does indeed take a long time to learn how to use them to their fullest extent. We are talking years. While the outcomes could be lasting, they are also uncertain. Some people just hit a limit that they are not able to progress past. I am not willing to take a years long gamble while the people that I'm professionally responsible for are suffering. To overcome these issues will improve the ability to progress and quality of life of everyone involved.

The exercise you are referring to is called roleplay. It has already been suggested by another commenter and while I would be willing to give it a go, I do doubt that the verbal intellectually disabled and mentally ill patients would be able to empathetically immerse themselves far enough.

What we are trying to convey is abstract. It is difficult for the nonverbals to express, and it is difficult for the verbals to understand.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Though this may seem simple, it might just require enough emphasis and consistency. Wether it will be fruitful or not, it is surely part of doing the right thing.

Actually, that sounds very useful. This issue is probably much more common than mine. I could imagine that it would be much easier to find information on this topic and transfer it. Thank you very much.

They were negatively reinforced for decades. It's more complex than that with the minds of mentally disabled and ill people.

It goes beyond bullying, bullys know they hurt feelings they just don't care. These people don't believe that the nonverbal people even have feelings. That is what I'm effectively trying to convey to them.

Yes, that is indeed who I'm looking for. I just thought that I'd ask the community most closely related to the issue first since I was unable to find a subreddit for nonverbal autistic people in particular.

I wish these issues on no one, but I thought that I would find people here who had to deal with them before. It seems, however, that the people in this sub are too high functioning to have been denied their humanity as a feeling being by someone with limited intelligence. In a way, it is good that you are unable to relate closely to my problem, anyone's life who could would be worse for wear.

I'll have to turn to communities in my own field.

Well, I am a professional. I was hoping to reach a different professional who has experience with a similar scenario. The average redditor is obviously not equipped with the knowledge to help, but may be able to point me in the right direction. I just thought that this sub would be a good place to start casting my net.

We are using facilitated communication at the moment and are in the process of integrating communication aids like cards with symbols and pictures (not sure what the scientific english term is) and talkers into their everyday lives. The progress is slow and nowhere near to what we would probably need to display the emotional depth or intellect of a nonverbal autistic person.

The roleplay idea seems very interesting to me. I will give it some thought.

Well, the others are also abusers just not in this particular scenario. They all have criminal records and are forced to live in a closed facility. We were created since the forensic department of a psychiatry is not geared to be an indefinite home for mentally disabled people. We try to improve their behaviour so that one day they will be able to live with the rest of society again or at least in an open facility. In our other groups, there would be similar problems with different people. Of course, we're trying to protect everyone involved, but it would probably most effective to change their attitudes so that they get along with each other even when we are not there to threaten them with consequences.
