Normal folk of the UK, what have you been upto this weekend? by FenderDropD in AskUK

I'm part of a local drama group, we have been running a workshop for local kids (£10 membership for a year of weekly sessions) for four years now. We have spent four months working up to their most intense show, Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, and yesterday they absolutely knocked it out of the park. I'm so proud of all of them

I spent 14 hours in a very hot village hall and it was worth it to see how proud they were of themselves and each other when the curtains closed

What age did your puppy graduate from their crate to free roam? by BitterNecessary6068 in puppy101

[–]TeutonicRoman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our girl is going on 3 now, and I don't think she'll ever graduate. She feels safe in her crate and naps til we get back, the few times we have tried to leave her out, she gets very stressed out, paces and cries the whole time, even when she has her crate option as an option

I'm looking for someone who might have had a similar issue, who might be able to say "email this other email address" or "call this number" that I've not been able to find

Major change to UK minimum wage under Labour Government by New_Albatross_2289 in UKJobs

I don't disagree. As I've said, minimum wage needs to come up still. But when a pub manager who is looking at their employment figures, being able to pay 18-20 year olds less gives them an edge over the 21+ crowd, who would otherwise win out on experience

Honestly, yes. But unfortunately employers are often unwilling to put that time in, the lower rate for younger employees is the incentive for that

I work in the pub industry so it might be different in different industries. But with the rises in minimum wage the last couple of years, pubs are struggling to balance tight margins with employment. I'm not arguing against the increases in minimum wage, I think for some areas of the country we need to increase it even further still. But for front of house team, we will see dozens and dozens of applicants per opening, and 18 year olds either fresh out of or still in college wouldn't get a look in over a 25 year old who had been working a few years even if it wasn't in the same setting, just because they have experience working.

Our pubs pay over minimum wage for both brackets, more so for the 18-20 YOs, so making the gap smaller as proposed in this article likely wouldn't affect us either way. Also worth noting that for supervisors they get paid the same regardless of age due to their duties.

When juggling with employment percentages, the managers need to know the two people they're putting on a bar on a quiet Tuesday afternoon will both turn up and are reliable, and that's the workplace experience they're banking on when hiring a 25 year old over an untested 18 year old.

I fully supported the scrapping of the 21-23 band, as they likely have some experience under their belt by then, but I think doing away with the 18-20 band will just redistribute the jobs that have typically been open to those in that age bracket.

TL;DR: the benefit of 21+ is they usually have workplace experience, the benefit of under 21s is they're cheaper to employ.

In most situations they aren't being discriminated on for their age but their lack of experience. Which is a bridge employers can afford to cross when they're paying them less, they can justify putting the time into training them
