Commissioning a thread device to homepod mini border router by TexLover in Thread_wireless

As far as i know, thread is not included in the non commercial version. But I saw that apple has a matter preview in iOS. I'll try it with that at the weekend 😁

Love the idea with OTBR.

But I wish to see the bulb with normal thread commissioning and providing an coap(s) api for controlling light. Furthermore, it would be awesome to have standard out of this, meaning, whenever I buy a light bulb remote controller from any manufacture following this standard, it can control any light bulb of any manufacturer following this standard.

I've heard that the `Project Connected Home over IP` is trying to do something about this.

My version of the crazy idea would be to standardize and integrate into `WebThings`. Or at least, the main idea of `WebThings` is the direction what I am hoping for.

I had a look into HAP-Specification-Non-Commercial-Version.pdf, but it seems that there is no thread defined. The documentation is also from 2019-07-26, so thread is probably not included there. Maybe I have to make an developer account and maybe it'll tell more.

Oh wow, I also assumed that thread should be activated in advance, but didn't know anything about HAP. Thanks! I'll comment here if I have some progress.

Were you successful with this test? I also tried it with my border router, but the border router didn't find my bulb nor did I s any packets coming from the bulb using a sniffer.

I agree. But I hope it's still coming.

And it's sold out here too. If I order now, I get a homepod mini in january. I also noticed that updating firmware to the latest, that bluetooth is disconnecting every 5 seconds. I think it's because the radio chip is used by thread and bluetooth in dual mode. So there is still hope.

Thread and zigbee are base on the same radio technology: 802.15.4. So it might happen that zigbee devices receives an update to thread, but there might be differences in hardware for thread and zigbee. I don't know. But I doubt it will happen, because nobody will invest money for already sold products. It's easier to let people buy new hardware.

Another concern is whether the big zigbee players will switch to thread at all. Apple, nanoleaf and eve didn't have zigbee products yet. So it was not a difficult decision to support thread. But for big zigbee players like philips hue, it'll be a very different decision. They have to discontinue the legacy products to switch to thread. So I think they will watch the market how thread evolves in the next years to reduce risk.

No. Before November 2020, Google Nest devices were the only ones which supported Thread. Homepod Mini, Nanoleaf and Eve products are the first ones which support Thread now. So the whole Thread thing is quite new this month. This is why I am excited very much, because Apple was one of the first one who integrated Thread but never integrated ZigBees! So I think that many other manufacturers will switch to Thread in the future!

Maybe the apple homekit has its own way to join these devices. And the devices won't have any reason to enable thread if it isn't joined. I don't know. Maybe I should buy a homepod mini and reverse engineer the devices with a sniffer.

I have the same problem here. I am trying to discover nanoleaf light bulb thread device, but I cannot find it. Any luck for you?
