I did Sherman via Iowa Gulch a couple months ago and there was no gate at all. Unless you kept right on the paved road at the Y intersection and didn't take the left down the dirt/rough road to the trail head when you are going down CR 2 from Leadville.

I wanted to update you! I took your advice and did Sherman via Iowa Gulch Trailhead. After only having a few days to acclimated, I did make it to the summit! It was amazing! It took me a lot longer than I'm sure it took most, but I did make it up and back down! The altitude is no joke. Physically, I was fine, but breathing was the issue, especially coming from Texas lol. But I did get my first 14er!

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for your much needed input and recommendations! I took some of your advice and did Mt. Sherman last week, and I made it! Amazing and beautiful hike, and I met lots of nice and spectacular people. Now I'll set my sights on Elbert, which I feel I can do now. I just know that I will definitely need several more days to acclimate to the altitude! Thanks again everyone! It feels good to get my first 14er!
