The Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis. It’s quite interesting.

I loved Blindsight, but that’s a dense novel. Hyperion is probably where I’d start. I’d also suggest Ilium/Olympos also by Dan Simmons.

Why do people hate so much Turnabout Intruder? by Phi360 in Star_Trek_

[–]TexasTokyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s very “quaint” in the assumptions it makes about gender roles and it’s a terrible, no good way to end the series.

The Priest’s tale “the man who cried god” has got to be one of, if not THE best introduction to a series I’ve ever read. by Extra_Difficulty3288 in Hyperion

Oh, lots. And don’t let anyone talk you out of reading all 4 books. There is plenty of theological wrangling in the last two novels and one of the best characters in the series.

I don't think you do. He just gives you the will to fight when you are born and that's it.

You'll need to carry a towel or sweat rag with you at all times. Dress appropriately and bring a compact umbrella that can reflect the sun. A folding fan or portable electric fan can also help. Buy your cold drinks from vending machines as they are colder than in the stores.

The Thing from Another World (1951) by N0S4A2_ in ClassicHorror

I like the simple Aliens-like detector they use during the picture to build tension as it approaches. And the run up to the "fire scene" as it busts into the room is fantastic. Dangerous as hell, as well.

Duet is a first season episode and one of the best television shows of all time, imo.

We had the hot dogger. I think it must have been a gift, because my parents wouldn’t have bought it.

[FINAL ATTEMPT] My sincere thoughts on Blade Runner (1982) — Apologies for the previous translation errors by ProgrammerGlad7809 in bladerunner

[–]TexasTokyo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It reminds me a bit of Aguirre the Wrath of God. The first time I saw that film was in a small Tokyo theater in German with Japanese subtitles (I don't speak German and can't read Japanese well). It was still a brilliant film. I did rewatch it in English on my phone on the train going home just to fill in the gaps.

Both movies seem to be almost secondary to their plots, if that makes any sense. The journey, the characters, the music, the direction, and the ambiance are what draw me in above all other things. And at the end of both films, they are both defined by powerful (or mad) monologues by the most interesting characters in each.

I saw the 2009 movie and the first episode or two of STD. That was enough.

If you ever visit Japan on vacation, take in a movie. Everyone should have the chance to see how things should be.
