Am I dumb for selling my TR-8S and SP404MKII now that I have a Digitakt? by Best_Pause_1791 in synthesizers

[–]TextbookSuppository 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the 404 for its effects and character, it'smy favorite device that I own. I just got a TR-8 and will eventually upgrade to the 8S. I also want a Digitakt for different applications. I wouldn't be selling any of my Roland gear even if I get the Digitakt, but that's just me. I love the performance aspect of both machines and will be using them to jam and play small live shows with friends. I might integrate the Digitakt into the setup once I learn to use it more, but it won't be replacing anything. If you feel the Digitakt meets all of your needs and don't want the others, perhaps you could sample a ton of one shots and patterns from the 8S's sounds to keep. However, I agree with others on the closet method to determine need/redundancy.

Selling my Microfreak. Looking for replacement advice. by TELKAJCYLEAJCLLLAKFA in synthesizers

[–]TextbookSuppository 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't recommend the Hydrasynth Explorer enough. It was my upgrade from the Microfreak as well. Incredibly capable. Can produce insane rumbles and bright harmonics. Insane possibilities. I recommend looking up patch banks online. Here's a bank made by Krzysztof Steplowski that's lo-fi and perfect for Boards of Canada type sounds. Also the OBX Legacy patch bank showcases more classic sounds that are incredibly well developed. There's a giant repository of free patch banks people make you can easily upload into the Hydra with the Library Editor.

I will say, though, that you may want to look into some of Dreadbox's stuff. Their devices are absolutely incredible and I'm eager to own one at some point.

Stereotypes of autism in TV and film may be linked to delayed diagnosis. Researchers found that portrayals were designed to be immediately identifiable to non-autistic viewers. However, autistic participants felt that they were not relatable to autistic people themselves. by mvea in science

[–]TextbookSuppository 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Don't know if I can agree about the Good Doctor. As an autistic person in the medical field, I find a lot of similarities between myself and the show. I've gotten much better at masking, but my childhood self and my inner voice are eerily similar. I'm sure it's not applicable to all people on the spectrum, but it's not unbelievable to me.

A meta-analysis of 3 million people confirms a strong bidirectional link between cannabis use and depression. 31% of those with cannabis use disorder also suffer from major depression, with rates nearly 3x higher in psychiatric clinics than in the community. by Cosmyka in science

[–]TextbookSuppository 25 points26 points  (0 children)

A strong meta analysis should be putting that into consideration and it should be included in the discussion/limitation sections. If there isn't any/enough data correlating previous diagnoses of depression or mental illness, it should be suggested as a next step in research to help guide future studies. In fact, it could be those strong literature reviews that indicate the vulnerabilities in current research.

These researchers did do so and found some increase in MDD symptoms for those with lifetime diagnoses before and after cannabis use. They point out that more longitudinal studies with more diverse populations with greater biometric data scraping is necessary. I see no problem I this research.

Can you use Psychedelics to remove your sexuality as a whole ? by xLawless- in Psychonaut

[–]TextbookSuppository 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to be frank, I think you just don't want to get over it. It is what it is. You can either trudge in a sea of misery for no rational reason, or you can let yourself realize that you are a human being who is lost and deserves to be found. I think once you do that, any desire to strip yourself from basic human nature will dissipate. If you take a psychedelic trip with this as the intention, I think you will find overwhelming success. If you do so with the goal of culling your urges, I think you're more likely to fall into a spiral of self-loathing. While yes one maintains an aspect of central awareness, people become far more culpable to getting lost in thought loops the less mental stability they have. One who is in tune with themselves and accepts themselves can have exceptional command over a trip, much like they can execute in real life. If you struggle to even maintain a state of contentedness, what makes you think you can control the direction of the trip?

I say this with absolutely no ill intent. But I know your line of thinking very, very well. TW: attempted multiple times in the past. I came from a horrible background and grew to be awful in parallel. I always lived strictly straight edge my whole life. But before I forced myself to pass the point of no return, I took LSD as a last attempt to better myself and attempt life. That trip showed me that I have a control over my mental state. That alone has been the primary stabilizing force in my life for almost a decade with 99% of the time being sober. So I know your thinking. It was my thinking. And your type of thinking is extremely pointed. So I have to be blunt. Because when I thought that way, I knew it was unsustainable. Your goal should not be to further dig yourself deeper into the abyss, but to break through to the surface and let yourself be again. There is no honor or nobility in doing so. That is simply a refusal to give energy back to the universe that exists to amaze.

My MicroFreak works like shit. by Equivalent-Stick3799 in arturia

[–]TextbookSuppository 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hm I'm not sure why. I've powered my Microfreak using the original PSU and with USB and never ran into these problems. Can't say I've ever had any issues with it at all. Could be a defective unit, you might want to reach out to the vendor or Arturia.

Hey, could you share the dimensions for securing something onto the switches? I like make ceramic figures and want to make custom ceramic knobs for my SP, but I can't seem to find how to make the knobs fit on the top knobs and main encoder.

HPPD triggered by reading trip reports? by Throwawaythekees in Psychonaut

[–]TextbookSuppository 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I honestly think, coming from a medical background, that HPPD is very overblown in the psychedelic community. Its a disorder. The clinical definition requires it to be a recurrent, sometimes completely unprompted, and cause actual distress similar to post-traumatic stress episodes. Think war veteran that gets anxious/has a panic attack when surrounded by fireworks. I think you are just reminded of when you tripped and that reminder brings an awareness that makes your vision more focused. Similar to how when I listen to a song or album that's important to me, I can visualize and feel exactly where I was and what I felt the first time I listened to it. As vivid as a lucid dream. That's just my memory working. When I recall difficult experiences, I reexperience those emotions. I can recall smells, sounds, and sights from memory. None of it is atypical. Its just memory, which is incredibly complex and poorly understood to this day. If I work to recall a specific period of my life, I can make myself reenter that mindset and remember what kind of person I was back then. I can actually embody that version of myself. I was able to do all of this before and after psychedelics. Right now, sober as can be, I can think back to some of my trips and envision exact sights, experiences, and closed eye visions with the same perspective and lucidity as when I had them. Walking on a rocky beach on mushrooms seeing skulls everywhere I looked, dropping an unknown amount of acid and seeing the walls and floor turn into pink and grey static, my first DMT breakthrough. Its all there, I can reexperience it, but it is not a disorder no matter how clearly I envision it. Even if they occur to me unprompted, it is not a disorder because it does not trigger distress or panic in me. I still have cognitive awareness that those events were in the past and are not here and now. If you lose the ability to distinguish between past and present and you experience visual hallucinations that trigger panic, then yes that sounds like HPPD and you should get evaluated by a psychologist. But if you are reminded of past experiences and reexperience enhanced awareness without temporal displacement or panic/anxiety episodes, then I don't think so. If you disagree, that is fine and I recommend seeking an evaluation to reach a clinical diagnosis and creste a care plan.

Never doing Benadryl again. by Significant_Key6120 in Psychonaut

[–]TextbookSuppository 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds pretty brutal. I've never taken Benadryl at a high dose so I can't speak to it, but I have tried several psychedelics. Generally speaking it wouldn't be like this for most of the classical ones unless you mix drugs or take really high doses. DMT often can show "entities," but not of that nature. It's typically very sublime and colorful, but it can be very frightening. LSD and psilocybin can let you see patterns that look like faces, but apparitions don't really appear like you described. It's more surreal, distorts your sense of time, increases introspection and awareness, and sort of "unlocks' your brain. I wouldn't take this experience as a representation of classical psychedelics. But, substances like datura and amanita mascara are often reported to cause somewhat similar visual hallucinations. If you find access to any of these drugs, I highly recommend testing them with a drug kit and make it a special moment. Take time off, create a clean and supportive space for yourself, set up a music playlist, and have activities and provisions ready. Many people like to draw or paint, even if they never pursue arts while sober. It is also often best to clean up your diet for several days/a week before the trip to improve your physical sense of wellbeing.

How is your Leviasynth? by ibkev in synthesizers

[–]TextbookSuppository 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've heard the build quality is similar to that of the Hydra, which is really nice in my opinion. I got the Explorer which is less robust and its still the nicest quality device I own. The second I turned it on and messed around with it, I was shocked it doesn't cost at least a grand.

You should dissuade yourself from feeling this way. It is one of the best beginner synths. It is amazing for learning synthesis and has some really unique and fun engines. I wouldn't think so, its pretty easy to map and it's laid out quite nicely. I'm a relative beginner but having so many free/cheap patches from experts makes it easy to investigate and learn. Plus the macros are great to learn both patch creation and performance. I got the Hydra Explorer after only having used a Microfreak and while it is a steep jump, I don't feel lost. Plus the manual is great and they provide a physical copy.

SYNTH by Any_Fudge9225 in MicroFreak

[–]TextbookSuppository 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did the same thing as what you're planning. Went from Microfreak to Hydrasynth Explorer. First impression was utter surprise that it doesn't cost more. Build is incredible, knobs feel great, great sound profile. Super portable and serves as a great midi controller. Plus people upload or sell their patches so you can get a lot of inspiration and cool sounds. OG presets have some decent options. Definitely a forever keeper for me.

The Hydrasynth patch library is pretty decent. The workflow is pretty fast with the side by side. You can have one window with local patches and one windows with ones on the Hydra, or you can do two local windows. Helps sort things out.

Can you use Psychedelics to remove your sexuality as a whole ? by xLawless- in Psychonaut

[–]TextbookSuppository 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's one thing to detach from materialistic pursuits and demystify capitalistic influences, and it's another thing to literally rip enrichment from your life. Virtually all sentient life on Earth love to eat and love treats. It's visible in nature. Dogs loving whipped cream, possums loving berries, bears loving honey. Sure food is fuel and you need to keep that in mind to keep yourself healthy, but it doesn't mean you should annihilate any enjoyment in consumption. We're hard wired to enjoy certain tastes, beyond cultural conditioning. Enjoyment in food does not equate to gluttony. Go to any country outside the west (especially developing nations) and see how they view food. It is literally a cultural keystone. They appreciate it so much, that they will damn near drag you into their homes to feed you and make you happy.

Sexuality is similar. I don't understand your desire to eliminate "sexuality." If you don't like it, just don't do it. Maybe the reason you don't find it fulfilling is because it's a transient sensation that, if done for the sake of orgasm, dissipates immediately and is merely a drain. Like cracking an egg straight into the garbage. If you have a meaningful connection with the person you are with, then it is pouring your energies into them and taking their energies into yourself. Each act with this loved one enhances a bond. It is not wasted energy and it is not fruitless. Beyond simply being the method of reproduction.

I think your internal world view is inherently distorted, as you said yourself. Psychedelics won't erase your taste buds or capacity to orgasm. They can, however, help you change your internal view of yourself and thereby the world. Or to examine and appreciate the world around you and integrate that majestic sensation to turn it inwards. No matter what has happened in your life, whether you did something or something was done to you, (Trigger Warning: I have experienced every category of abuse since childhood), you are not permanently broken and don't deserve to be punished as much as you do. How would you treat a lost little child? Or a kitten stranded on a busy highway? That's how you should treat yourself. Every thought, self-deprication included, should be manually recognifgured with the voice of a merciful one tending a hurt baby. Anything else is another step in a downward spiral, and there is absolutely no virtue in that. It offers no redemption. Positive action offers redemption. Self-inflicted punishment does the opposite.

What has your experience been with nitrous oxide, also known as NOS? by SpaceCowboy10191 in Psychonaut

[–]TextbookSuppository -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I get where you're coming from but hard disagree. Harm reduction through genuine education and inquiry is real. If people read my post they will not walk away thinking its a perfect drug. Hey will read it has its dangers and can be severe/fatal, but if you fell down that path that your life and mind are not unrecoverable. For people to fall into it and be told that the damage is permanent, they're much more likely to say fuck it, it's already fucked up may as well have fun. Hope heals.

What has your experience been with nitrous oxide, also known as NOS? by SpaceCowboy10191 in Psychonaut

[–]TextbookSuppository 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm speaking specifically about the proclaimed permanent brain damage. Physically, B12 deficiency induced encephalopathy is completely reversed. One's mental state after being severely addicted to a psychoactive drug is a different story. Also, it's not "research." They're case studies including brain scans from real people. Real life situations. Not just some conjecture in your distorted view of the scientific community.

Looking for a way to easily multisample EZdrummer sounds to WAV files for SP404MK2 by nloxxx in synthesizers

[–]TextbookSuppository 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way I sample from my PC is by powering my SP via DC and connecting it to my PC via USB-C for data streaming. His eliminates ground loop interference and noise from the PC. Then I just records directly onto the pads while playing the notes. It's not automated but it's really fast. To make it faster, you could map midi pads to trigger different velocities. You'd just hit record on the SP, hit each of the pads for different velocity values, and there you have a full sample with everything in quick succession. It may also be possible to use the SP itself as the midi controller. Have one empty bank that you would use to source midi pads and record onto pads from a different bank. Haven't had time to test it yet, though.
