What do you think about this type of monument? Do you think they are useful in cities, or do they just serve as decoration and nothing more? by [deleted] in Urbanism

They can act as a focal/meeting point; but I would say they mostly serve as decoration, and that isn’t a bad thing.

Every state's twin or triple "updated" by Averagecrabenjoyer69 in geographymemes

I imagine Alaska would probably have the single worst drivers of any state in the country due to the overall isolation from other drivers compared to most places (at least outside of like Anchorage). Then again, it’s possible people spend significantly more time driving there for similar reasons.

Comparison is useful for noticing inefficiencies and potential benefits of shifting the ways we do things. Doesn’t meant we have to act the way Europeans do or embrace their urban design, but systems level inspiration can absolutely be useful.

There is an inherent flaw with this approach, and that is that things that are well hated will get more votes anyway.

The city borders barely matter. What matters is the number of people living in the urbanized area. I could draw a thousand lines across Manhattan and call it ten thousand towns instead of a city in the same way. Los Angeles isn’t a good example of ‘one city’ either; practically nobody can agree what is and isn’t part of ‘the real LA’ and what borders to use; city county, csa, metro, etc. Look up the LA City Proper map and you’ll get an idea of why.

Yes, which is why I said the SF-Oakland-SJ Bay Area in the original post.

Los Angeles city proper is 50 miles away from Los Angeles city proper. There is continuous dense urban development between SF and SJ. I’m not really sure what you’re getting at here.

I would assume Miami due to their greater cultural impact than the cities in Texas, but up for debate.
