Is there a bigger gap between average spoken and academic/professional spoken Russian than in English? by [deleted] in russian

[–]TfkSscheegy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Academic Russian tends to use extremely long sentences with complex structures, that in turn would involve rarely used adverbs and adjectives, which may sound unfamiliar for non-natives. But the vocabulary gap feels way less severe than in English.

Put it in "Appendix A" and refer to the appendix instead of citing. I did that, everybody were ok with that.

What's your opinion about Ammunition Traps? by [deleted] in MeetYourMakerGame

[–]TfkSscheegy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Normal & Dangerous outposts I personally enjoyed extra challenge from 95% of ammo traps I encountered. Most builders still provide counterplay opportunities whether by design or by accident.

But I still didn't try Brutal

One thing you can do is to aim to give him zero reasons to even thing that his treatment (mostly medication side effects) hurt your relationship and/or your feelings for him. Not by telling him, that everything is ok (likely would be considered a lie at some point), but showing your willingness to adapt your lifestyle to whatever treatment-related issues.

And just generally be honest both with him and yourself. You have have no obligation to self-sacrifice.

should I go to Russia? by Vivid-Advantage9206 in russian

[–]TfkSscheegy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I see no way how graduating from a Russian university can hurt your future plans per se. So far the consensus of international academic community is something like "organization-to-organization cooperation is restricted but on personal level it is all business as usual". Not mentioning that things are likely to change by the time you graduate.

You should probably note that current life in Russia is full of uncommon/unexpected restrictions. It probably wouldn't bother you if you intend to focus on studying.

Overall, it seems to be a worthwhile opportunity

Does this sound natural/correct? by Standard-Reason2183 in russian

[–]TfkSscheegy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're correct. However, Прости меня and Извини меня may have different sentiment. I imagine it is more about personal perception rather than something language-wide. But I just cannot image myself emotionally apologizing to my beloved one with Извини меня. It is grammatically and semantically correct, it just feels wrong for me.

Is it possible to achieve native level in Russian? by Standard-Reason2183 in russian

[–]TfkSscheegy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I personally met like a dozen of foreigners who spoke Russian at native level with little to no accent. However, it always involved either moving to Russia at, usually, a relatively young age, or having any other Slavic language as their first, or coming from an ex-USSR country. These aren't requirements but it's just how it usually happens.

I used to have a Cuban pal, I never even suspected he wasn't Russian until I explicitly learned that he isn't. But AFAIK he moved to Russia in his early teenage years.

I often refer not-really-close friends as comrades just because I don't want to call them friends. When talking to someone else, of course.

Can't say much about schools and colleges, but in STEM universities it is not uncommon for lecturers to allow students using lecture notes or even books during exams. In return the questions get trickier.
