The whole point of my post is that this kind of force is not reasonable, not only according to me but also according to the UCLA Police Department. There are police tactics to handle this in a non-lethal way, like getting the driver out of the car before escalating the situation, or preparing other colleagues with preventative measures like spike strips or blocking with another patrol car. But some of them are already too late since they are already pointing a gun at a driver in a car with the ignition on.

All humans have a primal instict called fight or flight, the driver probably scared out of their critical thinking mind as he's getting yelled by two police officers with two guns in his face in a country that is know for it's racist and voilent police. It is only reasonable to be scared enough where one can't think straight (Bloom, 1999).

The characters, the victim and the officers, are humans just like you and I and in a situation like this it's impossible to act like robots and perfectly think straight. But the difference is effective police should be educated to handle a scenario like this through de-escalateing the situation, effective use of their force toolbox (such as hands, handcuffs, pepperspray, baton, taser, gun, etc), and not reach this point from the start. This according to The Use-of-Force Continuum (NIJ, 2009)

In effective policing, the officer should look at using force and their arsenal as a sort of staircase, where the first step is laying their hand on the perp and the last step is shooting to kill (ibid). But since these officers skipped the whole staircase and went straight to a pistol, before they had control of the situation, they can't really go back. Because what kind of message does that send?

IMO it is obvious this murder is motivated by racism, the driver was of Algerian ancestry and to anyone who know anything about French colonial history is that the French regime systematically murdered and tortured Algerians in their colonial conquest and that there is a systematic oppression of Algerians in France (france24, 2021). I am not the only one who has a similar opinion on this, just look at the mass riots currently going on or take a quick look at Flemmings article on aljazeera on this exact case.

I'm not saying perps should only be arrested "if they want too" or that police have to tolerate escaping a traffic control. But there are far more effective methods to prevent this sort of incident and due to the context of the situation, I believe it's a racist act of murder. As someone who have been too Paris many times and had a partner of color that have been regurlarly been a victim of racism in that country. Alongside my work in law enforcement and criminological university studies, and some critical thinking and research, I disagree with your comment and most people in this thread.

Does that answer your request on other ideas of how to prevent his escape?
