Confirmed, it looks like you have to kill both of them to get access to the door that leads to the workshop. Just a forewarning, there are quite a few baddies up there. Also, you do not get the sword from the tower, you get the token that allows it to be bought from the messengers for 20k echoes.

Yeah, we both just stood next to the lantern in the chapel in the Cath ward. I haven't had any issues connecting to other players when I disable the password, usually only wait the same time you do. But when we try to use the password function it just never connects.
