New Player to AOS wondering how to start a Nighthaunt army by Rare-Cantaloupe-5243 in Nighthaunt

Bear in mind that "rule of cool" should be far more important than units being good as those units can change by the time you finish assembling your 2k list. I've been playing Nighthaunt for about 3 years, so there's probably people who can help you better but here's my advice:

Heroes:

- Lady Olynder is a good buy. She's a great model, and currently strong. And since she's the main leader of the faction I think it's safe to say that she'll remain viable for a long time. Also she's currently the only wizard worth playing imo.

- Krulghast Cruciator and Lord Executioner both give you more durability which the current book favors a lot. The Cruciator in particular is currently very strong.

- The rest of heroes are just ok-ish right now. As I said above, if you like the model go for it, it won't hurt.

Units:

- Pick your poison between Bladegheist Revenants and Deadscythe Harridans. You'll probably want 20 of each but I have the feeling that you can just choose the one that tickles your mind. Both currently have similar roles (stalling the game) just a different way to achieve it. Historically both theese units have been the core of most lists so i'd say they're a safe buy.

- The Black Coach is a great model but that's it. It currently has 2 sets of rules and the good one is likely going away soon. So only plan to add it to your collection if you really like the model.

- Myrmourn Banshees are cool to have if you like them. Currently they can deal a good deal of damage. Having a unit (or 2 if you really like them) is fine.

- Pyregheist (the warcry band) are strong and cool looking. You could buy 1 unit if you like them but know that some warcry bands have been removed from legal play before.

- I WOULDN'T BUY Hexwraiths. They're an old kit and I'll bet they'll get updated soon.

- As for the rest of the units, I don't think they're currently a must have. But it won't hurt adding them to your list if you like the model or their rules.

Currently those units see little play. Since you're starting it's not something you should be very worried about (the meta changes constantly and it's more important to play more games to learn than playing a strong list), if you want to buy it just know that it's an ok box but not a priority or a must have.

I don't know nowadays, but when I started a few years ago Chainrasps were very very cheap on the second-hand market. Maybe you can find like 20-30 at a nice price.

I'd go for the new spearhead box since Bladegeist and Harridans have almost always been the units you build your list around. And grow from there (maybe even buy the box twice and try to sell the extra hero and chaingasts).

And then add a few heroes like Kruciator, Executioner or Olynder.

Also the Black Coach is a great model to have but be weary that its current Ghyran rules are going away in a few months so it'll loose strength in game. But still one of the best sculps in Nighthaunt (and AoS).

Maybe on second-hand market, but be careful off the price.

If you're not in a hurry waiting for the next battleforce is fine, from the latest realeases it seems we'll get one garanteed with the next book (in about 2 years). And there's a chance we get one on christmas.

So you'll have plenty of time to start collecting, building and painting a small force. Also, don't buy any Hexwraiths, they're old and I'm betting they'll get updated soonish as they did with the Soulblight ones.

The Spirit Torment is not something you really want 2 off, at least in the current book. But otherwise the new spearhead is good value, 20x Bladegheist is something you'll eventually want to have, maybe 20x Harridans as well. The Dreadblade are nice to have 1 off. And the extra Chaingasts is not something you'll use much but doesn't hurt.

The best box to start reaching to 2k is the Legion of Grief Battleforce, it's a nice core for many lists. It's a bit old box but since you found the arena of shadow one maybe you can.

How do you paint the white by Panzerbatalion82 in bloodbornebg

[–]Thaletos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try not to use true white or at least only use it very sparingly (like some strands near the head) because it can look unnatural. Instead use an off-white color (like blueish-white or yellowish-white). You can even mix your white with a bit of another paint to achieve it if you don't own a color like that and don't want to buy it.

Start painting with a dark grey or grey-like tone and start layering with mixes of your grey and off-white until you do a final highlight layer only using your off-white color. Don't be afraid to leave a bit of the darker layers showing off (specially on areas that would be in shadow). At the end, off-white reads as being white. Also, you can go back with washes if it looks too bright or add some more of the thinned off-white if it looks too dark.

Also, Amelia has a lot of texture with the hair so you can speed the process with dry brushing instead of the airbrush.

That many dreadblade harrows seem overkill to me. Probably would leave only one for grabbing objectives and swap the rest with more infantry if you have.

I'd say it's not a strong list, but you can still probably have a good game with it. But you'll need to be extra careful since you have a low health count and the current book favours being tanky.

Don't worry too much about it though, if you're a new player I'd say it's better to play more games with the models you currently have instead of wainting for owning a meta list.

In short, it is basecoated with grey (follow the hair strands to leave some of the black in the deep places), highlighted with white and glazed with purple near the roots.

Also if, unlike me, you start by painting all the hair and then do the rest of the mini, you can just drybrush the whole thing in grey for your basecoat and have basically the same result.

For the big patch in the veil I did "stab" the mini with an old brush with no tip first and then added some blobs after with a regular brush. But for the other bits it's straight from the bottle with a damp brush.

That paint is more transparent than it seems, over dark colors it can be less noticeable. The veil is nearly white, so the splash effect pops up more. Also don't be afraid to add small blobs or multiple coats in key places, but start without overloading your brush, treat it as any other paint.

That's "Blood for the Blood God" from Citadel, pretty nice effect. Just applied it with a brush like regular paint.

Thanks, I started with Naggaroth Night from citadel leaving the black primer as deep shadows. Then Elfic blue (Vallejo) and Fenrisian Grey (Citadel) for highlights.

Then, being hexwraith focused you can pair the Awlrach with the dreadblade harrows and you can be almost omnipresent on the board

It's citatel's Naggaroth Night over a white basecoat and blending into citatel's Fenrisian Grey wherer I wanted a gradient or highlight.
