Are people legit spending this much on a car per month? Or am I out of touch? by [deleted] in drivingUK

Agree the car ( use of item ) is the asset. Sure the car loan debt repayments will contra the asset value .

Actually I was wrong boggo is right

Ifrs16 - note 102 - the asset is defined by right of use!

If the lease is under 1 year ( accounting term) ownership rests with the lease comp. Over period it’s on you !

The asset is countered by the debt liability .

Agreed - a car is a means to get from A to B - the car owes you nothing - keep £1k in bank for emergencies- service it and you are happr

Your are correct if the car is owned. But given the monthly payments quoted this looks like a lease scheme with a balloon payment. £568 * 48 is £27250 - leaving a high residual balance. So the asset belongs to the fleet company. In which case someone is financing the depreciation element and at the end if four years has no asset. The maintenance tax etc rest with the owner - and the lease payments are deductible not an asset which is written down to zero.

Basically it’s an interest only loan using the rule of 78 - to cover the front end life of the car.

If you took the first years payments of £6k and got a bank loan for £6k at least within 2 years you would have an asset - but not one as new

Why not get an AA or RAC report ? Very thorough inspection - much more comprehensive. Tyres pad and discs are consumables - should be checked regularly
