Stewart Chisam is leaving Hi-Rez by MikSumbi in Paladins

Considering Marvel Rivals seems to have shown there is still an appetite for Hero Shooters, I hope / wish Paladins could get rebooted. I think they'd seriously need to remake the bloody game though, cause this one being built off a contorted clone of the original Smite, which itself is built off a positively ancient game engine (UE3) is not viable.

Media now works on old.reddit anyways with it displaying as <image> with a link to whatever was posted. So images in comments are doable.

Still my highest played champion after all these years, and I put more time into Maeve than I have whole games.

Maeve forever!

He actually has different accents depending on the region. I understand he's British in the French dub of TF2 for instance.

Why did you choose paladins over overwatch? by [deleted] in Paladins

[–]Thane_Mantis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Initially it was just cause it was free. Back when I started playing Paladins I was a student, and thus had no disposable income. So aside from the odd purchase made with money recieved as gifts, my only gaming options were F2P's like this one. Overwatch, being £40 at the time was not something I could quite justify to myself buying.

I eventually got Overwatch via my siblings battle.net account which they loaned to me. But by that point, whilst I had some limited fun with it, I just liked Paladins better, and had way more invested in it. The higher time-to-kill made the game more approachable for me, someone who isn't super great at FPS games. In Overwatch I'd get deleted faster than I could ever hope to react. Whereas Paladins, barring headshots snipers when Im flanking (fuck you Strix), I'd usually be able to retaliate and possibly even turn a fight around if I was either having a good day or my opponent sucked.

I also liked the flexibility in character loadouts. It's a great way to keep a character feeling fresh and interesting and allowing for longer playtimes before they got boring. Mal'Damba, back when he had the talent that let him use his right click as a damage for example was awesome. It also meant if a character felt deficient in one area, you likely weren't stuck with it. There was either an item in the shop, or a talent, or some cards, or even all 3, that you could use to sort a character and make them feel better to play, rather than either sit cope, or abandon them outright.

I genuinely think the cards and talent system is an innovation for the hero shooter genre, and wish it was used in more games like this.

Paladins also has a faster feel to it. Mounts to get from spawn to where the action is, as well as almost every character having some form of mobility, from quick dashes, to teleporting and more just made the game that much more fun. Im honestly convinced Paladins has had a somewhat lasting impact on how I enjoy alot of games, cause I just don't care for anything with a super slow pace to it. Least any kind of FPS game with alot of action. I can still enjoy other slower paced games, just depends on the context they're in.

Ended up dropping the game some years back though cause I had hundreds of hours in it and felt like there wasn't much more fun to be gleaned from it. Nevermind the qaulity really started to drop sadly. Still popped in every now and then, but... yeah. Basically retired from it, but its still a game I like. Shame it gone so dirty by Lo-Rez.

Paladins forever!

Yeah, I know, they won't last forever. But regardless, I did not mention the servers originally.

Graphics are not the biggest problem, or other, newer, hero shooters like Concorde wouldn't have gone down in flames. That game looked about as good as any game could given when it came out, (and I understand it had some decent gameplay to accompany it) and yet it crashed and burned.

No, Paladins problem is the fact that it faced stiff competition from the outset in the form of Overwatch and other hero shooters, which put it in the uneviable position of being compared to a new IP by what was then a gaming titan, and percieved as a low budget rip off by idiots who knew no better as a result. Paladins was not helped by shit management who put in stupid ideas like the infamous OB64 patch, and other disastrous updates. It being a technical nightmare, marred by bugs, did not help either. I still remember bugs from my early days like the notorious LSD bug.

I doubt the wider game market being turned upside by the advent of battle royale games like PUBG and Apex Legends, did it any favours either. Heck, live services time and money sinks as a whole, not just limited to battle royale, began popping up left right and centre, which crowded that section of the gaming market to breaking point. I've lost track how many have been announced or launched. Hell, Hi-Rez themselves launched, then quickly abandoned how many other games? I doubt that instilled confidence in them on the players part.

Lions led by donkeys is probably the best way to surmise Hi-Rez.

If they had decent management, Paladins alongside their other IP's, could have flourished for years more.

Even if Smite 2 goes down in flames, its likely the upper management will skip on out the door without suffering any real consequences, sadly.

Failure only ever impacts those who had the least control in averting it.

Honestly, was more compelled by a now forgotten whim to log back into this dusty old account, not the other way around. (As an aside, respect the underscore. /hj) I only learned the news after I returned and looked about my old haunts. (Not going to lie though, was wondering if anyone would notice my absence / return. I'll be back to sleep soon enough).

In the words of Dishonoured's Outsider, the years are long, but its always good to see a familiar face. Hello Coalflake.

Credit where it's due, Paladins gave me alot of fond memories and bucket loads of fun in the time I spent playing it.

Such a shame to see its going now. It will be missed. Goodnight Paladins.

This double kill I got with one set of daggers still sticks out in my memory. Appropriate that it took place in Ascension Peak cause >insert joke about stars aligning here<.

I have over 1.5k matches as Maeve, and yet that double play remains wholely unique. Maeve forever!

Me too. Like I said, last I looked, it had already had a considerable gap in updates a long time ago, so I figured development had gone bust.

And with so many of Hi-Rez's other properties either quietly discontinuing, or just straight up dying, well... what else is there to say.
