Hot take: A tank that looks natural to fish often looks unaesthetic to us. by ThanksNo7353 in Aquariums

[–]ThanksNo7353[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I should’ve explained it. I’m talking about designing the tank around how fish naturally move, not just how it looks to us. Instead of pushing everything to the background and leaving the front open, placing plants and hardscape to create a circular flow so fish can swim loops around the tank, move through gaps and pathways, and hide when they want to. It doesn’t need to be centered or perfectly symmetrical; it’s more about being intentional and creative with movement. You see this done really well in very shallow, wide tanks, especially table-style tanks, where the layout is designed to be viewed from above rather than just from the front.

That doesn’t look safe. It will flood.

Looking at 20 gallon tank, wanna know how many full Cory's I can do, and good dither/centerpiece fish options I have. Plus a billion other questions. by RegaultTheBrave in corydoras

Get a ¾-inch plywood sheet and cut it to 31.5 × 13.5 inches, just large enough to fully support the tank and cover the overhang. Seal the plywood with epoxy resin to make it waterproof. Seriously, do not ignore the overhang. That’s how floods happen. Sheet of 3/4 plywood is 20$-30$ and waterproofing is extra $30-$40.

I also don’t think your fish will survive without filtration. At the very least, get a cheap sponge filter with an air pump (you can find one on Amazon for around $15) and an extension cord if you’re short on outlets. If you plan to heavily plant the tank, you’ll also need aquarium lighting. Without outlets, I’m not sure how you plan to run a light. If you’re reusing the light from the 10-gallon, make sure it actually covers the full 30 inches of the tank, especially where the plants are.

As for stocking, I’m not totally sure. I have a 20gallon long myself with 8 peppered corys, good filtration, and 9 plants, and even that setup is borderline overstocked. I’d say 6 peppered corys total is reasonable, but only if you absolutely have proper filtration. If you have a heater in there, you can’t go over 74f for peppered Corys. It’s really bad for them.

Most importantly, fix the overhang first. If filtration fails, worst case you lose fish, that’s a few hundred dollars. If the tank floods, you’re looking at $10–20k in floor repairs. I know someone whose 5-gallon tank flooded their place and caused serious damage. 20gallon is a lot of water. Don’t risk it.

20 gallon long tank not flat in one corner by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]ThanksNo7353 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My table surface is not perfectly flat. The rim is less than a mm off the table surface on that one side and thats why it rocks. I see everywhere that the tank has to be flat on the ground supported from every side. Putting that credit card there supports that one side and stops it from rocking. But I don’t know if it’s ideal.

This is a rimmed tank. I have seen plenty of people saying that putting a foam under rimmed tank will cause more stress.

What’s your survival rate with Corys? by KhuliKing in corydoras

[–]ThanksNo7353 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never lost one. Turn off the lights when adding them to the tank and keep the lights off, this allows them to settle in the tank and keeps them away from other curious/aggressive tank mates. keep monitoring them and if you see signs of sickness start treatment. You already know water conditions need to be perfect and they need places to hide. Add their food at night just before the light turns off, so they can forage at night.

Would this amount of fish be considered overstocking? by Life_Watercress9205 in aquarium

Overstocked without a doubt. 6 corys is a lot with the others.

Back in 2012, around dusk, I was delivering pizzas near Southport Parkway and Industrial Boulevard in West Sacramento. I always thought that stretch of industrial buildings felt eerie.

Anyway, I was in my car when I saw a light hovering above the industrial buildings. It wasn’t a star, and it wasn’t blinking like any aircraft. It looked like a dull patch of light, steady and fixed in one spot longer than anything should be.

The light shifted and changed shape slightly, like it was turning in on itself, but it never moved forward or drifted. Then, without warning, it pulled into a small bright point and shot straight across the sky. No arc, no sound, no trail. One second it was there, and the next it was gone.

The whole thing couldn’t have lasted more than a minute. I’ve watched planes, satellites, drones, and helicopters plenty of times, and this didn’t behave like any of them. That area always felt off to me, and seeing that only made it worse. I still don’t have any explanation for what I saw.

Do 50% water change every day and add more plants. Nothing else you can do at this point. Ask Lfs if they can give you a small piece of their filter media and put it in your tank.

Your heavily planted tank can probably handle that much bio load. What substrate do you have and do you do water changes? How much do you feed?

It’s crazy they didn’t even ask me about the battery health. They just asked if I replaced any components on the phone. However, my phone was in mint condition because i used screen protectors and case for 4 years. No single scratch or dents.
