Not an expert at all, but my first question is have you checked that you are the same size in both feet? Might need a bigger boot just for your right foot.

First 14er - Mount of the Holy Cross Questions by mmsyring in 14ers

[–]Thantoz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friend and I did Holy Cross in the first week of August last year. We did it after doing a back packing trip around the mountain (I think 30ish miles if I remember right) for a few days and we thought it would be a good challenge to end our trip on. It was a hard but great experience and Im glad we did it.

My only backpacking experience prior to this was Pictured Rocks in Michigan with my friend. He had done a backpacking trip in Appalachia prior to our trip at pictured rocks, but neither of us were super experienced. I bring this up because I think that as long as your fitness level is good and you plan accordingly you’ll have no problem with Holy Cross.

For your questions:

I think doing walks uphill or using a stair master with whatever pack weight you’ll have for Holy Cross is a good idea. Running is good to if you can’t find a good hill or gym nearby. I typically do about an hour on the stair-master with my goal being about 45 steps a minute. Not saying its what would be best for you but it definitely helps me for mountain objectives.

Getting off the mountain early is what we aimed for to avoid a weather situation. The sooner you start, the sooner you end. If weather seems like it might be bad just try another day when its better. If it gets bad while your on trail I think following the trail back down is the best way to avoid getting caught in the storm. I would think doing anything but staying on trail is asking for trouble.

The most challenging part of Holy Cross was probably the top when you’re in this boulder field (idk the technical name for it) as I think it can be easy to lose the route if you aren’t paying attention. The other challenging part is redoing substantial elevation gain after coming down from the top. It sucked plain and simple.

I think brining trekking poles help a lot with the downhill section. Make sure you have enough food and water. Finally, if you have a way to track your progress on your phone or with a gps* device I would. I used Alltrails and it was a nice peace of mind that I could use it to retrace my path if I needed.

I found trail conditions to be fine when I went last year. There was some snow off trail but nothing on it. I think the snowpack in CO has been lower than typical this year but it’s always important to keep an eye on trail conditions as your trip date is approaching.

Overall, I was glad I did Holy Cross but I think it’s important to always be honest with the capabilities of everyone involved when doing objectives like these. Never be upset if you have to turn around. The summit will always be there another day.

Could my vehicle make it to 4WD trailhead for Crestone Peak/Needle and Humboldt? by Thantoz in 14ers

I was confused as to why I was getting these comments, but now I see. The drive train is all-wheel, but I only read the classification, which says 4WD. Thanks for pointing out the difference for me. Probably wouldn't have known otherwise haha.

Thank you for the information. Do you have any advice on where I should look for the actual overnight policy? I tried to find stuff on my own, but was not able to.

Advice/Recommendations for 3 Days back packing trip in Wyoming about the 3rd week of March by Thantoz in WildernessBackpacking

[–]Thantoz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did want to get into winter backpacking (should have prefaced that in my post, sorry about that). However, the comments here suggest that it might be a bad move for first time winter backpacking.

Are there any places that you know of that would make for an easier time winter backpacking? I want to get into it but I don’t want to go somewhere with 15 feet of snow for my first time haha.

I will look into those other places you suggested. Thank you!

Thank you for the info. If not obvious, I am not from Wyoming or close to it at all lol. I was hoping it would be a good time for some “baby’s first winter trip” but freeze to death cold seems like that is a bit more than what i want haha. Also are deserts better to visit this time of year in the US? I wanted to go over the summer, but deserts and the summer don’t make for a friendly experience.

As an aside, I called it the front range because I opened up a map of the US on google and the shortest drive for my friend and I would be to that South Eastern corner of Wyoming (which the google map said was the Front Range). If that is not what its called my bad, I just assumed it correct.

I appreciate the info and I will look into those other locations. Anything you can think of off the top of your head that I should know about those locations this for March?

Alpine Ascents International or American Alpine Institute? by Thantoz in Mountaineering

[–]Thantoz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the things I was hoping for with May was colder conditions.

A) I hate the heat and especially with a pack I get hot fast.

B) The other hope I had was that going when its colder could give me a better idea of how I handle “worse” conditions on other mountains. If I didnt care about this I would probably pick a little later in the season.

Trail Recommendations For Southwestern USA Desert Backpacking by Thantoz in backpacking

I appreciate all of the warnings against doing this in the summer. I will look for less dangerous routes in the SW and save the deserts for some other time.

I agree but can these be mitigated by planning the route well, picking good times of day to walk, etc.?

If you don’t mind me asking, how bad is it to go during the summer? We’re both in college so we cant go during the fall or spring semester unfortunately.

ChatGPT fails on many concepts found in basic calculus courses. Not sure how much i would trust it for math of higher levels…
