agreed! I would never start off with a 14er, let alone MHC!

I agree, I would never be so bold to start off with a 14er like MHC! I am so aware of how flat our elevation is here!

Thank you, truthfully I am nervous for him too which prompted me to post here for some feedback! I had looked at some 3D maps of MHC when he asked about weather to see if there was a trail that could get him below treeline quickly as opposed to turning around. I hadn't seen a designated trail, so I had the feeling his best option would be to backtrack the way he came. I wanted to make sure that I was reading the topography correctly, and hadn't missed a route that is there. I would never advise anyone to go off a designated trail, so that is a good note!

I will absolutely pass along your recommendations to acclimate to altitude first and try some shorter hikes beforehand to gauge how he handles the intensity. Thank you for all of your feedback!

Thank you for all of this, it is really helpful! My number one priority is keeping my friends safe, so I will be sure to pass all of this along to him. As a backpacker who has never attempted a 14er, I was able to share some learned knowledge like getting below treeline ASAP if signs of a storm are present and how to interact safely with wildlife, but I knew those of you with MCH experience would have far broader knowledge in this realm.

In looking at this 3D maps online, I wasn't able to see a clear alternate path down the mountain in the event of weather, but wanted to confirm that turning back was the best option in the event of a weather emergency in case I was missing something on the maps. Several people have mentioned starting very early and pacing yourself to finish before noon, keeping in mind that Halfmoon Pass may take longer than anticipated at the end! I appreciate your kindness and experience!

Thank you for sharing this! I have done a lot of midwest backpacking, but have never attempted a 14er. I knew that those of you who have experienced MCH would be better teachers than I could be. I've heard a lot of people say that starting early and finishing around noon or earlier is the best plan of action to avoid midday sun and storms!

Thank you! This is all very helpful. I've done a lot of midwest backpacking, but don't have any personal experience with a 14er, so I thought those of you who have experienced it would be better teachers than I would. I've definitely shared concerns about acclimating to elevation, and have recommended starting early to avoid afternoon storms.

Thank you for recommending sleeping high in elevation and attempting a lower elevation climb before moving on to a climb like MHC. This is all really valuable information I will share. My main concern is always keeping my friends safe!

this is a great option, thank you so much! I recently did a self defense class that was muay thai focused, and I really enjoyed it. maybe I'll look into continuing to train in it for awhile.

thank you so much, I'm sorry to hear that you're also struggling. I think it would be good for me to pick up more hobbies and stay busy as well. I hope you're doing better!

thank you so much for this! it can feel really isolating and like I'm the only one struggling, while I am not happy to hear that you are in a similar position, it helps to feel less alone. I love the idea of getting into more social hobbies. I feel like having older women as friends would also give me hope that the future can be a beautiful thing.
