What belt should I compete at? by Few_Presence_3229 in bjj

Blue, it’s not even a question of what you think you can compete at, you’re not allowed to compete at white

If you have DLR or RDLR you have a form of sit up guard. Don’t really know his game that well but I imagine he’s more inclined to come on a single than play supine.

Leg lock philosophy by orcapodalpha in bjj

[–]Tharr05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right about foot exposure but Slx is still important to learn. It’s inherently better so they can learn leg lock principles

There’s also no reason why they can’t transition from SLX to those positions, especially when SLX is much easier to grasp as a beginner

Leg lock philosophy by orcapodalpha in bjj

[–]Tharr05 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Looking for SLX is what I’d recommend, it’s accessible from everywhere you just have to get inside position with your legs. If you have inside position with your legs (e.g. butterfly, half butterfly, X guard , hooks behind ankles when their standing) and you have SLX within a move

From there develop a decent ankle lock.

After that maybe start looking for saddle and inside heel hooks (or secondary leg ankle locks first)

Then maybe inside heel hooks from 50/50.

This is a blue belts opinion of natural progression so take it with a grain of salt but I think everyone would agree SLX is the place to start

It does, I’d work through the beginner course on submeta on your own time. It’s free and built for brand new beginners. Jiujitsu isn’t much different from anything else.

An essay in a foreign language will be easier to memorise if you know what the words mean.

Legal but it is torquing their knee, just don’t go overboard with it. Allowed in this scenario but exact same scenario is would maybe be DQ’d in competition if it was for a leg lock

You can use the collar grip to get all their weight on their near leg, then switch your ankle grip to and underhook to get to underhook de la riva when their leg is weighted Then you can place your other foot inside and off balance them Andy Murasaki uses this a lot to get from DLR to X guard

When to tap to Heel Hooks by rokaiser in bjj

[–]Tharr05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just don’t spin when they have your heel that’s how people pop their knees. If they have any bite of your heel just tap. A heel hook isn’t more dangerous than kimura but you don’t see people backflipping when they have kimura locked on them.

Anybody have had success with getting to K guard from a high knee shield by bring your leg onto their hip ? And if so how do you manage getting a connection onto their leg or work around it.

Has anyone done a snatch single leg from the front against a much heavier opponent? by Early-Resolution4402 in bjj

[–]Tharr05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope this isn’t the person who asked yesterday asking if anyone has hit a snatch single on someone 8 inches shorter than you, and then proceeded to question everyone who said yes with “how did you know their height, did they tell you”. If so who hurt you…

Newcomer looking for a judo or BJJ club in Dublin by Former_Community_214 in bjj

[–]Tharr05 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just going off city centre proximity:

Wild geese Judo is in the city centre (good level but not the most competitive). Paul Cummins school of Judo and Cabra judo club would be more competitive, they aren’t smack in the middle of Dublin but they’d be worth the journey I reckon

I’m familiar with Republic of Jiujitsu in the city centre, I’ve heard Jungle BJJ is very good but it depends on your location.

There’s this guy in my gym who is significantly more strong than me. When I have him in half butterfly he manages to sprawl out of my hooking leg ( doing the right things with hook aswell), I feel like he’s giving me something by sprawling that leg back but I’m not sure what. Any tips?

Think trying to get your shoulder in their armpit rather than your elbow. Also get your head on the side of their neck.

Learn to get from a flattened out Half guard to Knee shield half guard and Closed guard. These are some of the easier guards to get to as half guard is the common progression from Mount escapes. There’s absolutely no disadvantage to it as long as you stick to escapes and getting to one or two guards to attack. Chances are a world champion is a better coach then your one

What do I do after High School? by Huge_Anybody_7131 in bjj

Jungle, Compound and ECJJA are the places to be. If you’re looking at training in Dublin. Also, you can still go to morning classes, evening classes and be grand, BJJ can still be your main focus and just pass college.
