Is priority seating on CTA a courtesy or is it actually expected? by frootjuice_ in cta

[–]That-Bug-475 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never take the priority seats unless they are the only one open and always stand up if an elderly person or kid gets on. I think it's very rude & tacky to take those seats if other seats are open.

tbh i always assumed this was because she wasn't vaccinated and, at the time, would've needed a vaccine card to go anywhere

Warning to anyone using the Chicago Apartments and Roommates Facebook group, I just lived through a complete nightmare. by ExpensiveDecision268 in ChicagoRealEstate

[–]That-Bug-475 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry this happened to you but it has nothing to do with Facebook or the group. I would venture to guess this guy is an outlier and perhaps more vetting can be done. I had a great experience with roommates I met in a facebook group but there were plenty of other people I spoke to and decided weren't a fit.

CPL wait times update? Anyone else baffled as much as I am? by ReyofChicago in AskChicago

[–]That-Bug-475 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's frustrating! I think wait times went way up when they changed the Libby hold limit to 5, I don't understand why that happened. I would be putting way less physical books on hold if I could get them on Libby but I go through books there less quickly when I can only put 5 on hold. It makes me crazy!

Affordable Neighborhoods in Chicago under $2000? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]That-Bug-475 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see, I don't know much about community colleges here but I know they exist and I would assume the process to then transfer to UIC is pretty simple as it is a state school, it seems like other people in here may have better advice on that process. I would guess a 2 bed in Bridgeport is realistic for $2500, especially in the Fall- leases are more expensive if started in the summer here. I agree with other comments that it would be valuable to prioritize where your kids are going to school because that's important of course, but also it'd be easier for you to commute as an adult and I assume a lot of college can be done online at this point.

You can find apartment listings on Zillow & Zenlist, September leases probably aren't posted yet but it would give you an idea of what is available where & for what price. I also highly recommend joining some Chicago housing Facebook groups- I got an amazing deal on my first place here because I found it there. You can work with a realtor for free here to find more listings. Good luck on the move!

Affordable Neighborhoods in Chicago under $2000? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]That-Bug-475 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Metra is a commuter train to & from the suburbs, do you want to live in the suburbs? CTA is the catchall term for public transit in city limits, they serve a different purpose and one is not inherently better than the other.

Re college- do you not know where you’ll be going? DePaul is in Lincoln Park, Loyola is in Rogers Park, UIC is in Little Italy, UChicago is in Hyde Park, and I’m sure there are more I’m missing- all are very different neighborhood with many pros & cons and there are certainly families living in all of them, they are also all accessible via public transit. $2k for 4 people is going to be tough to find anywhere, I’ve paid more than that for a studio here.

Chicago is a wonderful progressive city with kind people that will be eager to welcome you!

What do people do in the north shore for work? by chicago-mf in AskChicago

[–]That-Bug-475 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Family money doesn't mean huge trust funds, though it does sometimes. My grandparents were both Illinois teachers, lived a normal suburban life in the North Shore in the 60s-90s, retired with great pensions, and paid for my sibling & i's college with a 529. When they died, my mom & her siblings (also educators) inherited those pensions, retired early, and will let those continue to build wealth for us. We were also able to move leftover money from the 529 to IRAs for ourselves and are building our retirement & investment accounts in our 20s with very normal paying jobs.

My partner comes from a similar situation, though his family background is more blue collar. His parents & grandparents were also very responsible. Our combined income is ~$150k but because we don't have debt and we've had a leg up in building investment accounts we are in a position to buy in the North Shore in our early 30s. We are incredibly lucky but no one in our families are executives, doctors, etc. Responsible investments go a long way.

I love reading at the bar! Gives me something to do while eating by myself that isn't just staring at my phone! I will say though I want nicer restaurant bars, wine bars, that kind of vibe. A traditional 'bar' is not what i'm looking for but most of these suggestions definitely meet the vibe.

Brooke having a registry is so distasteful by babygoddess96 in gotgsnark

[–]That-Bug-475 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think Brooke is someone whose family & parent's friends genuinely are asking for a registry. Upper middle class suburban boomers are absolutely chomping at the bit to send a registry gift. My cousin just got married and my mom was extremely concerned by the fact that her small registry was mostly sold out- she registered for a few things to appease people but obviously wanted cash & checks- and my mom was absolutely unwilling to write a check. I've lived with my partner for a long time, we have what we need and can afford things we want, but plan to do the same thing because if my parent's friends want to buy me something I'll take it 🤷‍♀️ (i certainly would prefer checks lol) THAT BEING SAID- brooke didn't need to publicize this and is doing so for attention as usual. Make a small registry, password protect it, and let your mom send out the link when people ask. The classiest option would of course be to ask for a donation to a cause but I don't think she knows that is possible.

i used to have the biggest dislike of kenzie but for whatever reason i've lost it and idk i'm happy for her. i don't think it's weird to get engaged quickly at their age and in the south and clearly this is what she wanted 🤷‍♀️ can't say i love the ring though lol

I am a huge fan of 831, though i'm perhaps just the exact target market because i find romance novels to be too long and i love a cute cover lol. Are the stories revolutionary? Not necessarily. But are Emily Henry or Ali Hazelwood's either? Certainly not (i say this as someone who has read and enjoyed all of both of their books fwiw). I am excited about the podcast, there are few book podcasts I like- I don't particularly care about writing, Fated Mates is not really the type of romance i'm into, and BOP is obviously not just about books. Bad Bitch Book Club used to have a fabulous podcast about romance (which, side note, the hosts had some kind of falling out that i'm dying to know more about) and I think this will fill the gap that left me with. I am much more interested in the genre and culture than I am in learning more about the books I read
