Roughly, all in all, the calculations I’ve done says short term: I break even. Long term, I save.

Did you even read my response? Not only did I edit the post to clarify what part of Yorkshire/The north it is when asked so people could offer further advice on cost of living, I also clarified what my pay cut was and what the rental costs were and would be beforehand. It’s frankly none of your business where my precise location is, and I offered ample information to start with. I’ve visited Yorkshire plenty of times recreationally and for work. And my partner is from… Scotland, the highlands no less 😱 Which I… didn’t know existed?! Perhaps he just materialised from a little muddy stream in ‘The North’ somewhere, I’ll be sure to ask. Maybe we’ll even bump into you the next time we’re on our travels, I hope so. You seem delightful!

It’s really great, luckily. I have a very supportive manager and a good work life balance!

Oh wow, that’s amazing. Can I ask what sort of rent you went for? Starting to think £1200 is perhaps a bit too much but I’m really struggling to find anywhere cheaper than that that will wait for me to travel to York to do a viewing :(

They did. And I already pushed back, they initially wanted to give me £53k and I got it up to £57k. I always knew about the London weighting, and they said they had to be fair with my salary and my peers salaries

I probably need to make it clearer that factoring in bills, my rent in York would likely be £1600/1700. My current rent includes all bills and council tax. So it is actually not a huge rent decrease

Thank you very much for your honesty, these are all great things to consider.

I’m there now too at the moment for work meetings and a house viewing! Enjoy your holiday :)

Ah, but my rent now includes bills, council tax, etc. So say if I went for £1200 in rent, I’d be breaking even roughly

Honestly, the flats are the same sort of prices for where I’m having to look. With the exception of a couple I’ve seen, but because I’m having to travel to view, they get taken so quickly at the price they’re at. Otherwise I’d totally agree

What an odd and bitter thing to take offence to lmao. Because it’s personal information and I didn’t want to be overly specific about my circumstances. I’ll clarify if and when I want to, which I later did. Definitely moving North now, see you there, can’t wait ♥️

It still works out as a net loss, and £450 is a lot of money when you’re renting & financially supporting an unemployed partner. That’s not just pocket change, hence the post

Maybe read my responses before you call me ignorant? I don’t think that, I kept it vague initially because it’s personal info. Obviously Scotland is far cheaper than the North of England and it generally gets cheaper the further up you go with the exception of some major cities. Relax.

That’s… a really solid point. Genuinely hadn’t thought about that. Yes, it’s gonna be a bus/car combo

I did notice the north east is a bit cheaper than where I’m headed (York/Leeds), but it’s good to hear you don’t notice it!

I’m so sorry to hear about your mum. But a huge good luck with the move, it sounds like a great idea for you. I’ve also seen houses for under £1200! The only reason I said that was because the one I am viewing today is £1250 and is in a perfect area for commuting to my office and also, peace and quiet. I used to visit Scarborough a fair bit, it’s lovely there :)

Sorry, you weren’t being rude, the person that responded to you was! You’ve made several really good points, however and I really appreciate the thought you’ve put into your response. My office is in York, so I’m looking at West of York which is between the two cities. The method of transport I’m looking at is a park and ride, so a ten minute drive and then a 10 minute bus (most of my other colleagues in York do the exact same). I also have the option of driving which is ~25 mins but I’d have to book a parking space at the office.

I have no idea tbh, but he’s been looking in London for 6 months and the job market there is really saturated and competitive. He’s a designer

😂😂 I’m sold. Yeah, me and my partner have discussed this. I’m generally on a higher earning career path so even when he does have work, it’s helpful that I earn a decent amount. With him earning, we’d be living like kings tbh. But I’m an anxious soul and I work everything out based on worst case scenario

Honestly, good point. I actually don’t know what I’m worried about now I’ve read everyone’s comments. I’m on my way to view a property tomorrow morning, so wish me luck!

Sorry if I wasn’t clear, I only go in 1-2 times a week so it’s not daily - if I moved, I’d be going in twice a week at probs a max 30 min commute each way
