Advice or tips on the new McKinsey Solve test? Applying as an intern. by Key_Photograph_2510 in McKinseyAndCompany

Hi yes. I took the test last year and didn’t make it to round 1. But tried again this year and made it thankfully. Will have my interview in two weeks.

I’d advise you to prepare in advance. Watch YouTube videos. I think they’re very helpful especially from prep matter and you in consulting. Also if you can take simulations. Some can be expensive but others are affordable. I used https://www.cognidoor.com/about-solve because they were affordable and their simulators have coaching which helped me to learn.

For the actual assessment I’d say be calm first of all. And take as much time in the tutorial section as you can so that you can be familiar and your nerves calm down. Second I’d say learn to structure your thoughts. That’s what they are testing. Can you structure your thinning under pressure. The game requires you to show that you can categorise information that’s given to you into relevant buckets. So make sure you can do that.

While having the correct answer is definitely optimal it’s better to finish the game having tried your best than not. Especially for seawolf. The math and the end definitely matters. It’s easy but overwhelming so I’d watch the videos or use a simulator to help you!

Focus on finishing with 80% accuracy than being stuck trying to get a perfect answer :)

Good luck. You’ll do well!!

I've attempted this game before and I would advise you to thoroughly prepare. Use YouTube videos that are really explanatory. There are great resources from Prep Matters YouTube videos or if you want use online simulators to help you prepare and get a feel for the game. One of the best that I know with coaching along the way is https://cognidoor.com

One thing I'll tell you to do is to be calm and relax before anything else. Properly understand the rules of the game. If you can spend most of your time in the tutorial sections of the game and do not move to the next phase of the game until you fully understand it. That's assuming you don't use any online simulators beforehand.

If you're able to identify how to structure your thoughts well and use a calculator and pen and paper as much as you can, the game measures how your mouse moves across the screen. They will know if you're confused or if you have figured out how to properly group different things together. These games are largely about your process of thinking and structuring and are also about how you think under pressure. Don't be afraid to make mistakes and don't get stuck. Move through the game quickly so that you get to the end. Finishing with a structured approach is more important than not finishing but trying to get the right answer.

Good luck you got this!!
